Coin dipping identification

15 posts in this topic

This is my first post so I will apologize in advance if I am not following proper protocol. I recently purchased a 1886s morgan dollar off of eBay. The coin did look dull but I purchased it anyway. It has a grainy almost lightly sandblast look to it and I am wondering if this indicates dipping or could there be a natural way for it to appear this way. I will attempt to post pictures. Thanks in advance, I enjoy reading posts on this board.

Agreed,

The coin clearly shows evidence of cleaning with multiple scratches and no hint of luster or cartwheel. It's probably not worth much more than bullion unless you need it to fill a hole in a book.

If you can ship it back (assuming you paid too much), consider that.

keep it as an el cheapo lesson learned..............................

silver will be back up in a few years and the coin will be worth more than you paid even for silver value
