Newp: Landau siege klippe of 1 Florin 4 Kreuzer

12 posts in this topic

I finally got this coin today: a Landau siege klippe, KM-12.

The image is from PCGS, which captured the colors nicely but not nearly the flashy luster -- which, in hand, is tremendous. The eye appeal is awesome.

Found this online somewhere of this coin (but not this exact coin):

During the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), France fought against the forces of the Austrian Habsburgs to protect its claims on Spanish lands after the death of the Spanish king Charles II. Several nations, including England and the United Netherlands, joined Austria against the powerful French forces. Landau, a fortified town located in modern southwest Germany, was besieged by one of the most prominent figures of the war, Claude Louis Hector de Villars, Marshal General of France. Duke Carl Alexander of Württemburg defended the town, which fell to the French on 20 August 1713. Soon after, Villars himself negotiated the Treaty of Rastatt, ending hostilities between King Louis XIV of France and Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI of Austria. A series of klippes was produced by Landau during the French siege, likely cut from the silver plate of the town’s rich citizens.

Thanks guys.

For this time only, I ask folks to GTG without cheating (i.e., do not go to PCGS's cert verification site). This coin has also been to NGC, whose assigned grade (or grades) I will also reveal in due time.

Let me repeat this about the coin: the image is accurate in terms of the color, but does not show the tremendous luster (vibrant and fresh).

(Did you think I would do a GTG post on a "normal" coin? :) )

Well, I saw the auction on eBay and the holder, so unless you had submitted it for a regrade, I will remain silent on the grade.

I know nothing about these (I've never seen a coin like this before), so I might be way off - but I'd guess it is somewhere between choice AU and MS62. Leaning closer to MS62. It's a wild guess, though.

It is beautiful, I love it!!

So what is it Prowler? AU50?

No.

It is currently in a PCGS holder as AU58. Our hosts graded it AU55 -- twice.

I have it in hand, and it is hard for me to see AU55. Frankly, it is hard for me to see AU58 too, but I guess that is easier to accept since one man's cabinet friction and weak strike is another man's cir... Nah, I don't buy it. These uniface klippes aren't graded the same as regular strike issues, and this has the unmolested flashy surfaces and gorgeous eye appeal.

No big deal, because anyone who sees this in hand will understand what I'm saying.

I purchased this from a dealer who has done grading at a TPG and he called it unc. When I purchased it, it was still in the flip from the prior dealer - a well known European dealer who is known to have a very good eye - and it was called (their version) of unc. This coin has absolutely no wear on the reverse. The obverse has some mild weakness, but given the overall look of the coin and the fully unc reverse, this coin is an unc.

FYI, I tried it 4 times total at PCGS & NGC, but couldn't get it in an unc slab. (shrug)
