Weak strike versus wear

3 posts in this topic

I know this topic has come up before but I am hoping to get opinions on a specific coin I am looking to buy.

The first link below is to an 1864 Bolivia Boliviano NGC MS-63 from the Newman collection. I own this coin in PCGS XF-40 and only recall seeing it one other time graded, as an NGC AU-58 which Civitas Galleries sold either early last year or in 2011. I do not recall the specifics of the AU-58.

The second link is to an 1872 NGC MS-63 of the same denomination. This coin is more typical of the grade that I have both seen and those I own now.

Because I have not seen the 1864 very often, I know that this Newman coin might be a weak strike but I think the obverse is actually more what an AU-55 should look like or even an AU-53.

I would appreciate any opinions.

Not being very familiar with the series, I'm not going to try and make an opinion based solely on those images. That seems like one you really need to see in hand, or have a trusted dealer look at it for you.

That being said, NGC isn't usually that far off, and they have seen it in hand.
