No Morgan is safe from counterfeiting

My first encounter with a 1883CC fake. I wonder how many I miss and those buyers leave the hobby with a nasty taste in their mouth and tell an average of 9 people about getting burnt?

Counterfeiting began just weeks after the first coins were released in 1878.

These can be highly profitable and those that are purchased may or may not leave a nasty after taste since the buyer may or may not bother to have the piece evaluated.

 

As such, the buyer "may" never know that a counterfeit was purchased.

 

Will it affect the hobby?

 

Possibly but not to the extent that some would have you believe since as Roger stated, counterfeiting began shortly after the first coin was produced which was many thousands of years ago. And look at us today.
