1896-O Morgan debating on sending in,vote send or not

108 posts in this topic

Very nice coin - I was wondering if a cleaned UNC? original patina does not matter as much as original luster for XF/AU/MS

Many people submit coins to increase the value of a coin - it seems you are submitting coins to learn how to grade.

For the same cost in submissions, you could take a few days or week class by ANA on grading. If you did not have that much available time, you should consider going to a major show/auction to see many coins/grades at the auction preview and on the bourse floor.

I am not sure where you are getting hundreds of Morgans, but if you are buying them, you are probably paying way too much.

I agree if that 1896-O comes back MS63 or higher, it would would be worth cost of submission, but the chances of that are very close to zero at ANACS, NGC, PCGS....

You would need to send it to the minor/minor slabbing companies such as INB, SGS70, and some other I can not think of off the top of my head.

4,900,000 minted doesn't make it rare

Wow,Mary says its a common date..I thought you all knew something the way you bashed my 1st post.I will show you what this coin goes for and all this coin has to do is make it to AU 58 and if it grades better, its a home run

i've been watching this post for some time now, and it had too many twists and turns. so i decided to wait with my comment but i will now regard several comments made on this subject:

Why would you wonder if this coin is worth getting graded?

It doesn't seem as if it would be worth it unless there was an excellent chance that it would grade AU58 or higher. And if you think that, you really don't know how to grade.

You kill me!...You think your the best that ever lived.I hate to tell you but IF I wanted to turn coins I get,I make a very good profit...good enough that IF I wasnt 100 percent service connected from the 1st gulf war,I could make a very good living doing so with coins.I only sold for a short time when I had to pay a debt off to my father BUT I am just closing on a house at the moment and IF I wanted to..I could have the home paid off in 6 years. I guess the best thing I can say to you is;you keep doing what works for you and ill stay very happy over here.

THAT seems very rude. you're asking for advice and opinions, then attack those who try to help you cause you don't like their answers. in addition, after answering Mark like this, you later asked for his opinion on the 2nd coin you posted.. seriously??

if you don't really want help, why did you ask for it???

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So when have you decided that a 1896-O is not a rare coin?

1896-O $1 is in NO WAY a rare coin.

it maybe gets a little expensive in MS63 and higher, but i've been buying this date for melt in G-VG, and CDN BID is $32 in XF..

do you know any RARE COIN that goes for $40 in XF?? or for $130 in AU????

i don't!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess my 84-S isnt either, wait am I still on earth?

DITTO ^

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At best the coin is Au 50 which puts the wholesale value at $100.

So what is the point of spending money to grade this coin ??

If you send it in and the coin comes back with a details grade will you complain to us? FYI – the coin may have been cleaned and at the least looks to have been dipped and re- toned over time so I doubt it is original. On second thought maybe it spent too much time on a Donkeys back in a bag 116 years ago.

Nice effect with the Rare on the holder – was that you who put the MS on the holder ?? You think it is MS , show me the Luster - never mind there is none.

You apparently havent seen many morgans if you cannot determine by the picture that this coin still has its original PATINA on the coin.Ill show you the luster in about 3 months from now when I get these back from being graded. This will be 1 of 200 going out.

I am sorry – I am old and my eyes are not that good – yep your coin is full or its original patina and it is absolutely at least MS 63. No way has it be cleaned or dipped – that is just not possible because it was safely tucked away in that burlap bag on the Donkies back for all these years.

Once again please forgive my ignorance , I just don’t have a clue and will never be at your level of numismatic expertise. Should I go stand in a corner now ?

I think its a AU 58 and could very well pass as a 60-62 if I get blessed.

Pro tip: ANACS coins don't hold their value against their NGC and PCGS counterparts (9/10 that is)

Thank you

Anacs IS the oldest grading company.

Anacs GRADES VARIETYS The last group of coins I sent out had 8 varietys out of the 86 I sent.Do you know what the one grading company did that is supposed to be one of the top? They said well only grade top one hundred varietys and MIXED the varietys back in with all my other coins. Its hard enough to find varietys the 1st time,I dont want to have to search them out again,so some lucky guy I sold ALL 86 coins to has 8 hidden varietys, one was the extra ray on the 35-s that one O do remember.

Anacs on the other hand grades them and I dont have to worry about it.Trust me,Anacs will slowly creep back up especially the way the other 2 treat the smaller coin guy.

Thank you for your comment thoough!

excuse me - i've been waiting to say that for some time now - ANACS will put almost anything you specify on the submission form regarding VAM'S, varieties etc.. regardless of the coin being this variety or not. it is sad, but true.

i've had VAM experts look at VAM anacs graded morgans and agree that it is bogus, and my partner collects bust halves and has also found many many anacs graded halves with wrong or non existent OVERTON designations.

in today's market, if ANYONE decides to send a coin to Anacs/ICG/PCI or any of these companies, has a reason to do so. it might get you a higher grade or the variety you want on the slab, but when it's time to sell - you will find out the difference between an NGC/PCGS graded coin and yours.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who, here, is surprised that we haven't heard back about the grade received from ANACS? ;)

:applause:

Your threads sure do generate a ton of replies. Judging by the pics I'll go with XF/AU, not an expert but I can't see the logic of sending it in unless it slabs 55/58 or 60 which it's not IMO. Difficult to really get a grasp as the reverse pics are very blurry.

I told you it was no better than Au 50 . Where did you come up with $200 ??

NGC retail is $120 - you will be lucky to get $100 for it.

Coin Worlds retail is 200 ,I trust coin worlds prices alot more than NGC for an example Pcgs had my 1873 closed 3 listed worth 1200 when coin world said 1500,low and behold a few weeks later Pcgs was up to 1500.I dont trust anything you say,NGC says in fact every coin I sent in fell right under the level of a payoff coin.

I have been dipping my morgans for quite awhile getting one to 2 grades higher each time...many of the coins I sent in ORIGINAL they called cleaned,so much for them being professional graders and you buy coins from them. You can guess unless its a foreign coin, that most coins from 1922 on from the U.S have been cleaned at one point or another and ill tell you something else,I have compared graded coins from the little guy compared to brown nose a** k***ingBig coin dealers that bribe the grading companys and I have seen coins that come back not gradeable altered color but then you look on ebay and the exact same coin is in a slab. I wont get any more coins graded until the grading companys get HONEST. When I spend 30 dollars for a coin and it comes back worth 200 ill take it all day EVEN if it should have been a grade higher.I get small hits and I get big ones....Even bigger now that I wont waste money on grading crooks

Huh, so the coin graded exactly what we said it would? Funny, I guess we really do know what we are doing.

Just got the grade back you said it would??Wow,1st of all you didnt say it would one person did out of 20,yes..the odds are with you.Second, explain to me how when you send in 14 coins to be graded, they ALL get graded in the tier RIGHT BEFORE the coin is worth decent money (all 14 imagine that) 3rd,other people will catch on to the grading scam when they have MS 61 Coins and compare to other BIG dealers and see their coin is just as nice or better to one of their same coins in 62 or 63.If you are not awake to the fact this is really happening you live under a rock.Last,if you really think they DONT know who submits the coins for grading and their FAVORITE customers that submit 10 coins to my one coin dont get a break on their grades then you need to open your eyes!

We all have submission numbers assigned, they know by our submission numbers,if you are a number 900 ot less you can bet you get 5 star grades.Do not believe what I am telling you and just keep buying the coins I find for you to purchase.

In the meantime, you may waant to check your coin to see if it is a variety before you sell it.Since,The grading companys have now become too lazy to mark them, you may just find a winner!

It seems that we have had several of these posters throughout the years. I wonder if it is the same people or couple of people repeatedly creating alts, or whether there are just that many ill informed people who think they know more than the grading companies and professional numismatists. If the latter, I wonder where they are all coming from?

Ill Informed??Hahaha all you have to do is the next time you submit say a Indian head and maybe its a proof and it comes back altered color,Go on ebay and find a coin that matches the color exactly from a big dealer and ask yourself why is my coin the exact same color but it got bagged?

You do realize that online photographs do not always make the coin appear as exactly as it does in hand, right? Unfortunately, this happens in a minority of cases.
