The mint found that the copper nickel dollar was striking indistinctly,a problem not seen with silver coins.So the mint modified the dies to the narrower and sharper lettering!

A lower relief reverse die was made because although the original (type 1) die worked fine on the 40% silver, it was difficult on the Cu/Ni without extra force, causing excessive die wear and short die life.

 

A new lower relief was made so more coins could be minted per die - similar to the early Peace dollar obverse die change.
