The lettering on the reverse of the 1976 Bicentennial Dollar was changed to make it more appealing and for what other reason?

This weeks winner will win a copy of “100 Greatest American Medals and Tokens” by Katherine Jaeger and Q.David Bowers

There will also be a runner up prize given to a selected player with the correct answer.

The mint found that the copper nickel dollar was striking indistinctly,a problem not seen with silver coins. So the mint modified the dies to the narrower and sharper lettering!

A lower relief reverse die was made because although the original (type 1) die worked fine on the 40% silver, it was difficult on the Cu/Ni without extra force, causing excessive die wear and short die life.

A new lower relief was made so more coins could be minted per die - similar to the early Peace dollar obverse die change.
