The 50-cent note, Series 681, portrays the Ethan-Allen-class nuclear powered submarine Thomas Edison, a surface-to-surface missile sub. This engraving was made based on a photograph of the Thomas Edison taken off the coast of Scotland. On the reverse is an image of Air Force Major Edward White, the first American astronaut to conduct a space walk on June 3, 1965, during the Gemini 4 space mission. He was killed in 1967 while training for the Apollo 1 mission. The images were engraved by Edward R. Felver.
