Adam Pietz was employed in the Philadelphia Mint's Engraving Department from 1927 until 1945, when he resigned in disgust over the low pay. mad.gif

 

Despite the wartime inflation, he was refused a raise. He shortly thereafter took the commission for sculpting the Iowa Centennial Half Dollar.
