A slab that is given to a person by the company or TPG for free. They ususally are given away when a new slab design is released, an event is held, or sometimes just for a promotion. Sample slabs often contain low-value numismatic coins, like (at the time) state quarters or silver roosevelt dimes.

I learned about this the hard way. Seeing 2 PCGS sample slab 2000 sacagawea dollars on teletrade and thinking they were special minted before the run coins like the ones that are given to dignitaries etc. I competed in the bidding to the tune of $110 plus fees. Can you imagine my consternation when I called PCGS to inquire about the coins! Found out I could picked them up for FREE at longbeach. Tough lesson. (shrug)
