Short for "Specimen"

It is a grading term referring to a coin meant for collectors (not a proof) that was handled carefully to stop it from getting marks/dings - Not circulation strikes.

That's a very good question.....A specimen struck coin is a high quality struck coin that was made for either a presentation for a client of the mint or for the collections of that mint that produced them. Sometimes you will find that some countries have produced Specimen sets for collectors like they do for Proof coins.

Sometimes years ago they called Specimens,,, Proof's and vice-verse...There has been alot of confusion over the years about what is a Proof and what is a Specimen,,,,Now a days if a coin does not have mirrored fields and or frosted devices then its classified as a Specimen. IMHO
