1864 L Indian cent

A number of Indian cents show what at first glance appears to be doubling around the letters. This was caused when James Longacre, the engraver, punched the letters deeply into the die. This has been nicknamed "Longacre Doubling," but it is not a true mint error and is observed on countless Indian cents.

There are, however, some varieties of 1864 L Indian cents that show repunched dates.
