QUESTION:

 

What government issued the first Commemorative Lunar Coin series and what was the first coin issued?

 

Our first place winner will receive an autographed copy of “100 Greatest U.S. Error Coins” by Nicholas P. Brown, David J. Camire and Fred Weinberg

Answer

 

Hong Kong issued a 1976 Gold $1,000 coin commemorating the Year of the Dragon and continued the lunar series from there

Hi would have to say the first commemorative coin was issued by King Lysaimachos the King of ancient Thrace. 304 BC to 281 BC. During his reign he issued a commemorative coin depicting Phillip of Macedon. See P5 Sear 985S. He was a General under Phillip II and part of the bodyguard of Alexander the Great.
