Liberty was one scetch that VDB did and a branch was another one that VDB did both copied from the French two-franc piece.(Durst The U.S. Mint and Coinage pg.332)

On the recommendation of the Commission of Fine Arts, Gasparro removed thirteen stars and the words "Lincoln Memorial" from the reverse design.
