Does NGC ever net grade coins with questionable color?

Very good question. The interpretation of toning can be highly subjective. In some cases, the NGC graders recognize more obvious types of artificial toning and we will call those coins "AT". In other cases, the toning may be highly suspect or "bizarre" to the point of being market unacceptable and these would be labeled "QT". In still other cases, there may be just a minor concern but an overall interpretation that the toning is good. In a case like that, it is possible that the minor concern would be factored in with everything else in arriving at the grade. A good rule of thumb is if we find ourselves questioning the toning to the point of wanting to downgrade it more than a point, we would then be inclined to not grade the coin. This is generally true of any situation where net grading is being considered. As with grading in general, this particular area is not an exact science and is based more on expierience.
