Blanche K. Bruce,Senator Bruce At the 1880 National Convention in Chicago, Bruce became the first African-American to win any votes at a major party's nominating convention, winning 8 votes for VISE President. In 1881, Bruce was appointed by President James A. Garfield to be the Register of the Treasury, making Bruce the first black person whose signature was represented on U.S. paper currency.[2] Bruce served as the District of Columbia recorder of deeds in 1891–93, and again as register of the treasury until his death in 1898.was also the first black man to preside over the Senate and the first whose signature appeared on all the nation's paper currency (as Register of the Treasury starting on May 18, 1881)"

Judson W.Lyons

William T Vernon

James C Napier

Azie Taylor Morton

It is a little known fact that five African Americans have had their signatures on currency. The four African American men whose signatures appeared on the currency were Blanche K. Bruce, Judson W. Lyons, William T. Vernon and James C. Napier. These men served as Registers of the Treasury. Until the series 1923 currency, the two signatures on almost all currency (except Fractional Currency and Demand Notes) were of the Treasurer and the Register. During this period four of the 17 registers were African American. The fifth African American whose signature appeared on currency was Azie Taylor Morton. Ms. Morton was the 36th Treasurer of the United States. She served from September 12, 1977, to January 20, 1981. There are no images of African-Americans printed on U.S. currency.

There were Only four Registrars of the Treasury , who were African American , to have signatures on US currency .

The following are African American Registrars of the Treasury with signatures that appeared on US paper currency ( some can count Sen .B.K.Bruce as 1&2 because he served two separate terms , thus making five),

Blanche Kelso Bruce 1st term- May 21, 1881 to June 5, 1885

2nd term-December 3, 1897 to March 17, 1898

Judson Whitlocke Lyons April 7, 1898 to April 1, 1906

William Tecumseh Vernon June 12, 1906 to March 14, 1911

James Carrol Napier March 15, 1911 to September 30, 1913

Subsequent African Americans to have signatures on US Currency were not 'Registers of the US Treasury' , as the position changed title and name.
