1873-S $20 Open 3 Variety

1 post in this topic

Hello,

I have an 1873-S Open 3 $20 that is in an old NGC holder. The coin was graded by NCG as AU58, but the date variety of the coin is not specified as either open 3 or closed 3. I believe the coin was graded prior to NGC assigning close 3 or closed 3 on 1873-S double eagles. Images of the holder and a close-up of the date are shown below.

I would like to get the coin designated as Open 3, should I submit the coin for designation review? Is that the correct service? Will the coin be regarded or just assessed for date variety and re-encapsulated with a new label? I believe the coin to be AU58, but is there any chance the coin would be returned in an AU55 holder?

Thanks for your help
