I want to be very cautious as to how I address this issue so bear in mind, dear reader, this is a predicament that is mine, but may be yours as well. Accordingly, it is best to regard the following as a personal matter framed as a public service announcement. The great majority of members using the Chat Board feature know me and what I collect: French 20-franc gold roosters (1899-1914). Yesterday, after years of growing frustration and disenchantment, I disengaged myself from one search engine and decided to go back to Google, by Chrome. This morning, I received forty-two (42) consecutive, nearly-identical notifications, all time-stamped precisely at 11:38 a.m. which conformed to the following general format with a few variations. (Bear in mind, there is no one in the civilized world who is unaware I am interested in three coins: 1910, 1913 and 1914 examples certified in grade MS-67). "1899 France 20-Franc gold roo... Buy it now from $414... 3 new matches today." "See All Results," followed, encircled by a box. Not One Match was pertinent! As if this were not egregious enough, the message, "Similar items you may be interested in," similarly boxed, was followed by scores of arbitrary space fillers listed by every Tom, Duck and Harry in the continguous United States. For the doubting Thomas's out there, listings were made for all 16 coins in the series, some obviously duplications, with and without any regard to raw or certified status. One promising entry read: "ngc MS68 french 20-fr..." Not surprisingly, there was no such coin (though two have been so certified). I do not wish to make sweeping generalizations as regarding eBay practices, but I quickly learned you, the prospective buyer, is limited to ONE complaint. I expect my complaint to be dismissed out of hand, without comment. Sixteen coins, a purported "3 new matches today," followed by scores of inapplicable listings... you do the math and you'll understand why I am not a happy camper. Ironically, I was dissatisfied with my previous search engine because I refused to believe there was nothing out there in the face of burgeoning certifications. It would be futile to expect eBay to change their ways. I have revised my Coin Market Place post to reflect the fact I am prepared to offer any owner, collector or member an additional $500. in addition to the FMV to anyone as an inducement to consider parting with their precious piece, subject to review by.guidelines and Moderation oversight.

As most of the civilized world knows, I have been on the hunt for the highest-graded French 20-franc gold roosters for the past five years. My unending quest (some say, obsession) has had me engaged with numismatic concerns that use search engines which leave much to be desired, hence the longevity of my hunt. Recently, I decided to use my knowledge of my series, Roosters, to confront those who do not wish to embrace the symbiotic approach to selling. Departures from the norm are easy to spot. Two examples are instructive: asking two, three, even four times the FMV of an uncertified, ungraded coin, coupled with a "No Returns Accepted!" policy. This can spell disaster for the inattentive buyer taken in by apparently highly-rated reviews and glowing descriptions of the merchandise being offered which is very often compounded with an unfamiliarity with terms used and transactions conducted internationally. I have effectively immobilized five different sellers with a few simple, though critical, questions. Sellers who aren't accustomed to being confronted by my seemingly low-key style characterize my questions as "harassment." I am considerate enough to tell them why they will fail to make a sale and inevitably withdraw their listing. Apparently, eBay took notice and invited me to join a discussion group, very likely the same one that resulted to changes in their reporting procedure. They must have liked the line I used on one scam artist who, content to give me guff and then couldn't recall doing so only hours later in an exchange, resulted in my assertion that it was precisely people like him that discouraged eBay from doing business with coin hobbyists. No legitimate platform wants to be an unwitting accomplice or conduit to those whose intent is to deceive the public. A member elsewhere on the Forum stated, correctly, that sellers can ask whatever price they want, but my feeling is if you are insisting on being paid a fixed, clearly exorbitant price on a common, uncertified coin -- with a No Returns Accepted policy, you ought to be prepared to substantiate your extenuating circumstances with a reasonable explanation to my reasonable questions. If it were within my power, I would reimburse every member who had ever been taken advantage of by fly-by-nite hucksters.

It's been a few years since I ordered anything from eBay but I receive legal notices from them from time to time which I pay no attention to. I know whatever they decide to do, they do not have my best interests at heart. However, disregarding the multitudinous complaints about the site as registered by credible members intermittently here, I threw all caution to the wind, took a deep breath, and plunged into the world of international commerce, buying sight-seen (which a member here stated is the case if there is a return policy in place). I was actually viewing tokens generally and before long ventured into Etsy -- and the wonderful world of counterfeits which only served to validate my opinion that no one -- neither young or old, newbie or numismatist ought to venture in if unaccompanied by an experienced adult. Case in point: "copies" or "tributes," by whatever name known. In short order, I found something that caught my eye and, "prompted" to Buy Now or give it your best shot (actually, OBO, Or Best Offer, I did.) We're talking minor purchase here, $19.99, exclusive of sales tax and shipping. It was at that point I was rudely slapped in the face. Apparently, despite the fact you, the prospective buyer, are clearly given five offers to make, some algorithm guy in Nebraska (presumably acting at his employer's behest) decided my offer was not high enough to his liking. He suggested a much higher figure [that "the seller would be more inclined to accept." I looked to see where the seller of the fabulous fake was situated and presumably being shipping from, and was delighted to see it was Communist China. Guandong, to be exact. As is my nature, I balked. I structured my bidding sequence mentally to culminate in the suggested "sale" figure. (The truth is, I envisioned a factory somewhere teeming with underpaid workers and figured the actual retail price of this semi-artistic work was pennies on the dollar, and acted accordingly). Not surprisingly, my offer was accepted. What was more surprising was discovering shipping was free and the response I received, in substance, Offer ACCEPTED; Pay Up! was astonishingly quick. I was informed to expect the item within a range of time of up to three weeks. [No problem. I was in no rush.] They even provided a tracking number, and a "sales tax" of a dollar and change, which suggested to me this was a certifiably fugazy covert domestic operation with delivery to be effected by rickshaw. Now, being a realist, I realize in posting this here, now, at least four charter members of NGC's resident Anti-Counterfeiting League have black-balled me (one of whom has his vomiting emoji at the ready to express his feeling as to my choice: giving aid and comfort to the enemy). Do I expect to receive the purchase? Yes. And if I don't? I will cross that bridge when I come to it. My sole purpose in posting this is best expressed by a man by the name of Frederick Charles Wood who, prior to being strapped into the electric chair in one of the last executions conducted by the state of New York, made a last statement to those assembled to witness his execution at Sing Sing in 1963: "Ladies and Gentlemen, you are about to witness a scientific experiment: the effect of electricity... on Wood," which he reportedly ended with a maniacal laugh before being strapped in. I will post the results of my eBay "experiment," when the results, success of failure, come in. One.more thing before I go... in another bid on yet another site, I discovered bidding procedures have since changed. For simplicity's sake, assume you are interested in an item and, factoring time left and the bid already attained, you tap the button to view bidding history and learn that while you were led to believe 7 bids had already been made, resulting in a paltry sum, say $35., you would assume $40. was in the realm of likely progression. WRONG! I was informed someone had already bid $55. and my bid would have to exceed that by an unstated interval. Being a New Yorker, born and bred, I muttered, "OH yeah"? And promptly backed out. I re-opened my eBay coin store earlier this month and have noticed the following. Raw modern nickels and dimes are not selling. Silver dimes, state and territories clad quarters, modern zinc and wheat cents, Kennedy halves, Sac and Presidential dollars are selling. Also, I am finding that digital photos of the coins show more scratches and dings on the coins that do not always appear after checking with a loupe. I have not listed many of my NP clad quarters yet, but the ones that are listed get a lot of views and sold a 2021 WCD quarter.

Greetings. You prob heard about the $600 stimulus checks being sent out. I got mine. Not much money. Was wondering what I could do with it. I got the bright idea that I could start a new US coin business, buying and selling on eBay. I haven't signed up yet. Haven't had the time. Right now I am doing data entry on US quarter types and mintages. I don't know much about all the US coins. But I have great genetics. My Grandpa Martin on my Dad's side had an awesome collection. Lots of gold. So I decided that since I don't know much about US coins, I should just start learning mostly about one denomination. I chose quarters. Being new, and only starting out with $600, I would be foolish to buy gold or super rare coins. I just ordered the Red and Blue book. A few observations: Perhaps like you, I love looking at the coins being offered up on eBay. I can spend hours (which I don't have), browsing the eBay listings. If I ever get enough money, I would luv to get one of those big lots. I know that you prob will get taken on those, but they look like fun. I've been doing some studying on buying and selling coins, too. I am pretty confident that I will do well buying and selling. I won't be buying any "Buy it nows." Just auctions. One thing that amazes me is how little people offer for really nice pieces. You can have an Indian Head penny, in beautiful condition, well over a hundred years old, and you will be lucky if you can get five dollars for it. This ceases to amaze me! I'm think that I am going to concentrate on proofs, and brilliant gem uncircs. After I run the coin thru my screening, I will ask myself, is this a coin that I would enjoy owning? (In case I get stuck with it. I suspect that lots of folks over pay for their coins). Esp how people will hardly offer anything for really nice, old coins. Forget pennies and nickles. It would cost more in shipping than what most of them are worth. I'm going to stay with silver. I can always subtract out the silver value to find out the desirability factor of a coin. I have identified four factors that contribute to a coins price. I haven't worked out the math equations yet, but I will. Date. Everything else being equal, an older coin should go for more than a new(er) coin. Mintage and "Key" dates. Actually, these terms are interchangable. And while they do affect the price of a coin, it is not totally dependable, again, all other things being equal. Desirability. You can have the same coin, same grade, even the same year, and mint, and some coins, especially finishes, are going to be more desired by collectors in general. Burnished finish on proofs, and colored coins come to mind. They will be less desired by collectors. Even if the mintage is lower. Grading. Obviously the grade of the coin is very important. So we have four factors that influence a coins current value: Date, mintage, Collector desirability, and grade. Each of these factors can be gotten or calculated. So these are a few things that I am working on right now. I'm going to start slow, to just get my feet wet. I have had excellent experience selling other things on eBay. For example, I know that the photo is very important. I'm going to avoid all those "errors", too. They hardly ever sell. And I will be interested in mostly single coins, or very small lots. No rolls of coins or monster boxes for me. Rolls of coins wouldn't look very pretty in my beautiful treasure chest. And of course forget about monster boxes. I hope that I can make some money, get some nice coins, and maybe have a little fun, too. I'm retired, and going crazy with nothing to do. Wish me luck. Any suggestions you have for me of course are welcome.
