  1. Thanks Revenant. I haven't been active on these journals because the link disappeared from where I manage my sets! That was enough to throw me off. I will find a new link someday. Your Zimbabwe inflation set couldn't have been more timely! Happy new year to all the coin kids out there.
  2. i have a lot of tooth marks on slabs from my kid, one I had to get reholdered. now he has become a slab skeptic and just wants to eat raw coins
  3. As part of my collection of coins from 1916 (allegedly for my kid) I have been trying to get the Gold 100 Piasters from Egypt. It's a one year type, also known as AH 1335 in the Islamic calendar. Struck under authority of the British occupation in the middle of World War One when the Ottomans were on Germany Austria and Bulgaria's side. You can get piles of the 20P 10P and 5P silver coins of the same year, and also from 1917, but the gold ones are tougher. Although, watching Heritage auctions, you'd notice there usually are a few up every year. So I won one of them late last year, a PCGS MS62, and I sent it to NGC. They determined it was "NOT GENUINE" and sent it back. Heritage bought it back from me. Good people. So I really wanted it then, and I bought another one from an EBAY seller, this time in the old style NGC holder also graded MS62. I sent it into NGC to reholder in the new style holder. Guess what? NGC decided that one wasn't genuine either! They did the right thing and bought it back from me at the price paid to the Ebay Seller. Can't blame the Ebay seller for selling an NGC graded coin. What's the give away? I asked NGC, they didn't tell me. Any advice? They said to buy NGC certified examples! I tried that. But of course there doesn't seem to be a lot of better alternatives to trying again. Next time I get one I should just leave well enough alone. The numismaster listing for the coin says "prooflike restrikes may exist." Nobody has confirmed that this is what I have been getting and sending in, but, maybe that would explain it. Or it is just a highly faked coin. Anyways I thought I would share this experience of buying two actually-certified examples of the same coin that both were later determined by NGC to be not genuine. And, its nice to know both Heritage and NGC stand behind their businesses.
  4. I ordered some different kind of display things for sets of slabs from China I will post some pictures of coins in.
  5. I hadn't, I just looked them up, and of course you're right our mint is leading the way defacing abundant junkmetal I guess I still feel like I have one last refuge in our regular circulating pennies dimes and nickles, the infrequent halves. Most quarters still look right... on one side. Thailand has a bimetallic 10 Baht coin, which is a big hitter a 7 Eleven, but I still have reservations about more than one color on a coin. I'm sure that's somethingphobic
  6. remind him that he can stack the coins, and fifty cents beats a quarter
  7. from what I am witnessing, coins are selling at good prices lately so mazel tov and may the dough be with you any reason to pick GC over Heritage or what made you pick them?
  8. that 2002 coin with the bird on the thing on it looks like Aztec or Egyptian art. But these all resemble arcade tokens. I recently learned a little about Great Zimbabwe, the ancient city there, too bad things went this way.
  9. I am with youall the way on keeping everything in the same pronged style ngc holders not the old no-rim plugged hole kind And yeah leave all prongs it is confusing to the uninitiated to see coins with weird bite marks out of them great work I know how satisfying it is to get a uniform looking group
  10. I see these tokens, it is sad, and wonder how long till we live at Chuck E Cheese too
  11. There's no way my wife is finding out what the coins are worth till I'm dead. Or that will happen right after she finds out.
  12. US Mint has nothing I want. I'd take those gold 1916 rehashes from 2016 if I found them in a parking lot, but that's about it.
  13. I think at least for the late 1800s italy and friends were in a "Latin monetary union" that broke down when it turned out the vatican was quietly debasing its coins kaiser is collectable always. made a great coin say whatever else you want about him. I sold one of those 1900 20 marks 2 years ago and sort of regret that.
  14. any lady too good for legos instead of a rock isn't good enough for my tent
  15. yeah when I saw your post headline I was afraid I'd learn that NGC slabs disintegrate after 25 years or something. so much for "conservation." glad to hear that's not the story
  16. We need a slow release dermal .900 silver patch to aid with coin withdrawal. of course we'd wind up wearing dozens of them and still bidding It does feel good, incidentally, to lean your head back and put a silver dollar on your forehead for a while. Hope it helps, and the FDA has not evaluated these comments
  17. I save a fortune looking just at the front of coins
  18. you need to make sure the kids and wife know how to avoid depressing the floor tile that fires the spear
  19. yeah I've seen that thing. 3 is about perfect, 2 could make sense, and 5 or 6 would be a topping off point for a nice little gift set or breakout collection I think. The wall case? Maybe to fill with nonsense tokens as burglar bait but not for anything you actually like. Important to have a bunch of gold and silver electroplated bars and coins somewhere that will get found easily, can't beat this display to get them on the right path
  20. my avatar image is an old silver coin. collecting coins was a way to help me stop caring about metals prices.
  21. I've been looking at this kind of stuff too, considering kinds of 2-3 coin sets that could look good together in a nice box or frame. I saw those 3 slab wood boxes for about $30 on ebay, haven't committed yet. Any 3 gold coins ought to look good together! Put up a picture if you actually get one of these and put the slabs in it. I got one 3-part one last year, foam not wood, that doesn't fit PCGS, only NGC slabs. I think most other items selling now out there found a way to fit both and they say so in the description. Glad you survived your ordeal with some sense of humor too. That whole Texas thing has really added to the growing pile of things making me really want to move out to somewhere I can own a generator and store more stuff
  22. tell someone you trust to mail you coins from your own collection. getting coins in the mail takes the edge off.
