  1. I managed to get my "CC" privy but not without blowing a gasket or two first. This is no way for the mint to treat their customers. If the mint were competing in the open marketplace, they would have gone out of business long ago. Therein lies the problem. The mint does not have to compete for our business. After all, where are we going to go? To the dealers that charge us many times what they paid for the same coin?

  4. NGC allows you to put your pcgs coins in custom sets now so people should be happy now.

We have this little side show over here that is poorly attended. You can hang out here. The main show in the big tent is only for the special people.

Do you see how offensive, condescending, and irritating that sounds?

Excuse me, but I consider the custom side of things to be the best kept secret. It is here that the essence of real collecting or lets say collecting before the emergence of registries resides. Here the collector defines the set and what goes into that set. True, there is no competition or points here, but really, isn't it those things that take away some of the enjoyment of the hobby?

  5. Thank you!

I just added a custom set for the 1945 - 7 "American sovereign" which was a gold coin the Philadelphia Mint made for Saudi Arabia. I could post a picture and write-up box for my 1947 one pound piece that is PCGS graded, but now I can!

I looked at your "American Sovereign" set and found it fascinating! I had no idea that we made payments to Saudi Arabia after WWII with Philadelphia minted gold disks. The irony of it is that while our government could pay it's debts in gold, the American people were forbidden from even owning gold, let alone pay anyone with it.

  6. Is there any way of posting pictures of PCGS coins in the Custom Set mode if they are not already in the NGC registry?

Yes, if they are in your collection manager you can add them to any of your custom sets and from the coin edit menu upload any pictures you like. Or you can add them as new coins to the set and they populate the collection manager or is that vice versa? At any rate, I choose to add them first to my collection manager and then to my set. The downside is that you only get two pictures for your coin no matter how many sets your coin appears and those pictures are the same for all your sets. I've done custom sets for years and they are very flexible. To demonstrate I am including the link for my newest set, "The Coins and Medals of Laura Gardin Fraser."

I am glad to help, especially considering how much the educational benefits of your sets here means to me.

  7. I am of the opinion HT that you should not leave. I have always enjoyed your thoughtful posts while at the same time I have avoided all the threads that you mentioned in your post. I also get the same sour taste from these that you do. However, what I have enjoyed here is honest open dialog and an exchange of ideas. This I know though, that ATS they are tougher on threads they don't approve off that are perfectly fine over here. Thus what it boils down to is too strict ATS and not strict enough here. I do appreciate the not strict enough over here, and ignore the posts here or anywhere for that reason that I consider out of bounds or hateful. What ever you decide, I wish you all the best in your collecting pursuits.

  8. As for me, I will build my personal collection with the coins I like the most and judge to be of quality--I refuse to be confined to choosing a "Slab Loyalty".

I guess this means that my participation in the Registry is done...

To all of my longtime friends here, a quick farewell.

The "competitive registry" component will change, but the Custom Sets will stay the same (as far as I know). I will continue to use that to display and organize my coins and sets.

    Don't go! :)

  9. It's a PITA to me. I don't significantly use the PCGS Registry specifically because they don't accept NGC coins. All of my coins are on the NGC Registry, and of those roughly 2/3 are in PCGS slabs. I have a long way to go on my Type Set, and I strongly suspect I'll be buying coins in both major TPG's slabs.

As the saying goes, I buy the coin and not the holder, and NGC slabs have plenty of well graded coins (of which I feel ZERO need to reslab them in PCGS plastic, although I may send in the more valuable ones for CAC before selling them).

    ARGGGHHHHH!!!

What I think is implied in Mark's statement is that NGC slabs are cracked out, sent for crossover to PCGS, and re-entered in the NGC registry at a higher grade. I accept his reasoning and their decision to granfather older PCGS coins already in the registry. This I think will effectively level the playing field between the two registries. It will also cause an NGC registry participant to submit raw and crossover coins to NGC for grading rather than to PCGS for later entry into NGC's registry. This then is a business decision that makes perfect sense.

    Gary

While I have made thousands of dollars off of getting NGC slabbed coins to upgrade over at PCGS, I think the majority (or at least a large minority) of higher valued coins that are slabbed at NGC will not cross at grade at PCGS, much less upgrade. You are welcome to prove me wrong by taking a representative selection (NOT a handpicked selection) and attempting to crossover.

It seems to me that IN GENERAL a higher value coin is worth more in a PCGS slab than in an NGC slab. Are there people who crack PCGS slabs and send them to NGC for crossover? Sure! However, IMO, the vast majority of crack outs are from people attempting to go from NGC to PCGS slabs.

True, I don't disagree with any of your points, I was just stating that I understand this decision from a business standpoint and I'm surprised that this decision hadn't come earlier. I am only quoting what I perceive is Mark's logic behind this decision. By allowing PCGS coins in their registry, NGC is figuring that they are at a competitive disadvantage, even if more people participate in their registry than they do ATS.

  11. Having read the very interesting posts by Wondercoin, the thing that bothers me the most is that he has basically documented the inconsistency of grading these "uber-grade" gems over many years, and has also along the way documented the gradeflation problem.

For many of these "top pop" coins, take away the registry nonsense, and you have a $100 coin in a $10K+ labeled plastic holder. If that's what people want, then so be it. But, not my cup of tea.

I've been reluctant to comment on this thread but what brg5658 has summarized as evidenced by the other posts in this thread is true. I myself have been tempted by the registry bug, but as they say, "you gotta pay to play". That is just the nature of the beast. This puts pressure on the grading services to inflate the grades based on the demands placed on them by collectors desiring to assemble top graded registry sets (re-submits until you get the desired grade).

That said, it is not my intention to beat up on the registry system because I believe it serves a very important purpose. I've always believed that the best coins in a series belong in sets together. And all the better if they are on display for the rest of the numismatic community to see. The "competition" between collectors to assemble the best sets drives up the cost of the coins.

My desire then is to assemble sets that I can be proud to own based on my means to pay for them. They may not be the top POPs but they fit into my budget. Take for example the subject of this thread. I can't compete for MS-68 Rosies, but a set of MS-66 to 67 Rosies is definitely something I could be proud of and have fun collecting especially if I can cherry-pick the nicest looking coins for their grade. The registry then serves me as a tool to to assemble the best sets I can afford.

In my own collection, I have targeted one set to be the best of the best. That set is my eleven coin collection of Netherlands Wilhelmina 10 gulden gold coins. This set is only affordable because it's small and practically no one collects them. However, if it's about the coins and assembling the best of the best coins together into a set, then this set accomplishes just that. Six of the eleven coins are top POPs and all the coins are MS-65 or higher. Yes ego gets into it, but this set satisfies my fix for the best set without breaking my bank!

In the end, if someone wants to buy the coin that is the subject of this thread, they will have to believe that the coin is worth $10,000 AND that the coin is properly graded. That responsibility falls upon the person willing to spend the money. For my part, I'm just an arm chair quarterback agreeing with brg5658 that this is not my cup of tea, at least not for Rosies. Furthermore, I am in no way jealous of those who have the resources to do this as long as I can enjoy perusing their sets!

  12. I have a few additional problems, but I really like the new website. In time I know I will like things all the more. First, I use IE8 and firefox and I have found firefox more responsive and faster. Tonight, I tried to send a message to W.K.F. in response to his recent journal post. I always check the box for cc to my e-mail. Tonight when I checked the box I did not get a cc. This is my first attempt to send a message via the new website. I tried to resend the message thinking I missed something, same result. In all cases I got the message confirming that my message was sent. Since I doubt my message got through, I sent a message for him to confirm, which as of now he has not responded. I also wonder if I am receiving messages others maybe sending me. I sent the messages 8/1/10 between about 5:30 and 5:55 central time. Next when I try edit a coin from the collection manager and I click the other tabs in the edit window, if I have carriage returns in the owner description, I get the error "You have entered some invalid text in the previous page.HTML code is not accepted." The characters for a carriage return appear as "

", when I delete these characters I am able to choose the other tabs and make whatever edits I wish. I kind of feel like a beta tester and want to continue to offer positive feedback. Thank you for taking the bold incentive to upgrade the CS website to the state of the art website it is becoming. In the past I have worked with two different coin cataloging software packages. In the last week I have received solicitations to upgrade both. I will not be upgrading either, but am throwing my lot in Collectors Society. In a way this may be the highest form of praise. I do still maintain a backup spreadsheet, but I do this for my own personal reasons to learn excel.Gary
