Coins and Medals of Edward VIII

Richard Lobel minted many Edward VIII coinage  - mostly in the 1980's

The picture attached is of a bi-metal coin given to me by Richard Lobel when he visited my house in South Africa. I have only ever seen two of them around so must assume there is a low mintage. Perhaps 10? Not sure and Richard remains silent to my inquiry.

last post screwed up and couldn't edit.

I've called NGC customer service regarding a submission input issue, they had incorrectly put the wrong date on a item, I called and then sent a email to the person who handled the matter and NGC took care of the issue. Also reading many posts and also other places, NGC has a great customer service and are very helpful in general and have answered other collectors questions regarding a multitude of issues.

You could also go in the Ask NGC/NCS section and post your medal issue and someone there will address it to the best of their ability. Other members have brought up issues and someone from NGC actually replies to all the posts.

Thanks MK123 - I will post in the Ask NGC/ NCS section. Matt from NGC answered my request to have a South Africa Silver Rand variety recognized by NGC to which he promptly action-ed and the NGC Graders have now approved the variety designation. I just need to get the items together re pics and the NGC submission numbers. Thank you for the reply MK123

 only 203 were minted

Cool. I like low mintage pieces, even if there isn't a large market for them. It's nice to be one of a relative few who is able to own something.

Thanks MK123 and Just Bob for the comments. As long as it does not grade details I will accept any grade! Yes - I would say 203 qualifies for a low mintage classification. Hard to obtain one of these medals. I was fortunate to acquire this medal in such prestige condition. The owner obviously took great care in maintaining its quality. Lets see if NGC also recognize the prestige medal in terms of a good grade.

MK123 - this is the same kind of medal however the original one sent through had a weight variation and I have submitted the additional paperwork through to them so fingers crossed on that :roflmao:

Awaiting the results of a lovely silver Edward VIII medal:

Then had to resubmit a Pobjoy mint Edward VIII that came back with suggestions by NGC to have it submitted for conservation rehab...why would they not just send it direct there as they have done so with numerous other coins? Anyway the coin has been sent back and also undergoing grading:

Update on the two Edward VIII medals sent for grading (as above):

2827920001 seems to be almost completed (grading/ Quality Control). For the 2nd  medal, I am assuming that the residue has been removed and will now undergo grading by NGC...

Hi Guest. I can say that there was a mintage of a thousand of the silver made by Pinches and Co actually in 1937. The medal is 35mm in size. Information obtained from the Portraits of a Prince, J. Giordano. Some previous sales was with Stack's lot 2026 and Baldwins lot 747, Sept 2008. Furthermore Pinches also made gold  (100 pieces) at 22ct, bronze (3000 pieces).

I have not xrf'd the silver piece but I could comment and say it appears less than 9.25...probably about 80% silver. I will get back with an actual silver content soon.

Hi Mike here I collect British coin, tokens and medals. I have never seen St.George facing the left on any thing. I wonder why it was done this time. I think that in itself is rare. Thanks this is so very interesting and i don't understand the problems with the mintages. I don't know what's real and what's not. Surely in that age they would have them. The English are known for there excellent records go in back to the Normans. Thanks Mike

I recall that Edward VIII did not want to follow tradition and chose the opposite face effigy. Almost all St George and Dragon depictions face towards to right. Pobjoy keep record of all items they made. Geoffrey Hearn would be one of the first reproduced medals of Edward VIII. Some of the rare medals when Edward was Prince of Wales I am still attempting to obtain :)

There has been little official correspondence from Richard Lobel as to his actual mintage numbers...I have requested via email to Him to supply to no avail. If any avid collector does now the mintage figures of all can they please share how many of each fantasy coin he has minted that would be awesome! NGC and PCGS list some mintage figures of  the Richard Lobel Edward VIII series but am not sure they are all correct. Perhaps NGC can write to Lobel and obtain the actual mintage figures!?

Have asked for an xrf scan of the coin in the capsule.

Most of the medals struck around 1936/7 of Edward VIII kept with the nostalgic theme of the era. Each Minter however, gave variety to the design in their own way. Some medals struck then are not listed in any of the known catalogs (BHM / Portraits of a Prince) which makes collecting Edward VIII medals/ tokens/ coinage all that more exciting.
