2016(S) & 2017(S) American Silver Eagles

I'm an avid fan of the American Silver Eagles.  I take pride in maintaining a 100% NGC collection.  I may not be the highest ranked but I have all of them, varieties included.  I'm just wondering where, from April 10, 2017 to April 16, 2016, a mysterious 2016(S) Minted in San Francisco variety was added?  I've never seen one listed for sale and there is no population report available.  It's second quarter 2017, they didn't just mint them.  Where's this mysterious coin?  I notice there is now a spot for the 2017(S) Minted in San Francisco variety so I expect it will be issued sometime this year (but, why have a slot for a non-issued coin?) and will be on the look for it.  The 2017S PF slot is now available as the coin was released recently and I already have my coin ordered for it.  I missed out on the unlimited purchase quantity available from the mint because the big companies bought all of them in 2 minutes.  I would welcome a reply from NGC as to how these mysterious slots came from.

Ali replied: "NGC recently received information about where Silver Eagles over the past few years were actually minted. As such, we have added the appropriate slots."   The referenced article does not support this statement.  There are vague references about where they think these coins were minted.

"officials say they 'believe they have an idea' which coins were struck at which facility"
"Mint officials acknowledge that the silver bullion coins struck at the West Point Mint are robotically tubed, primarily, they note that the facility 'also employs manual tubing'."
"the grading service developed its theories"
"The service "speculates" that manual tubing of coins accounts for the tubes with lower quality coins"
"grading service will identify the Mint of production on the grading label 'if definitely known'"

"Coins struck at the San Francisco and Philadelphia Mints, boxed in tubes and secured with 'generic U.S. Mint straps', are also shipped from those two facilities for pickup at the West Point Mint. "

There is no possible way to "definitely know" where any of these coins were minted in 2015 and 2016 and should not be labeled as such.

I also have complete Silver Eagle sets and think the "struck at" labels are just a money maker for NGC except for the San Francisco banded monster boxes which were known from 2011 to 2014.  All the others were from West Point and there is no need to label them as "struck at West Point" and then have a slot for a generic label for the same year since there is no difference, both were struck at West Point.

I did see them being sold on the TV show Coin Vault and as far as i know they are the only one how has had then certified.

Why does it matter where the coin was struck if the only way you can differentiate them is on mint box?

It only matters if you want a complete competitive set according to Collectors Society definition.  It is not a variety but a curiosity.  Do you think NGC will crossover similarly attributed coins from other TPGs?  I like buying silver.  I like complete sets.  Buying graded bullion seems a bit weird even to me but buying an indistinguishable coin to have the "special" label is a waste of money.   (imho)

ALI, thanks for your info.  to the others, I agree.  I got started on the American Eagles in the late 90's, and have been stuck ever since.  I just want to maintain my complete collection.  I agree regular bullion coinage being "specialized" by where it was made is a way for NGC and others to make money.  But the Collector's Society requires it, so what can I do?

In a manner of speaking you can call these a die variety. For instance minted at San Francisco without the mint mark. It is similar to the 2011 anniversary set uncirculated SAE which is indistinguishable from a normal SAE except that if you sent the box the mint mailed the set in unopened for grading you could have the label designate the the coin was part of the set.

I checked my sealed monster box of 2016 silver eagles. It has generic govt. straps and a sharpie number 407172. Does this mean it's one of the boxes from San Francisco?
