What brings joy and satisfaction to a coin collector?

Thrill of the hunt

Many things that an average coin collector receives that a corporation and deep pockets can't.

That thrill going thru rolls of coins you just got from your local bank. That anticipation of finding that unique error or that near perfect strike. I recently purchased a original bank wrapped 1954 S quarter roll. That excitement knowing you were the first one ever to lay eyes on those coins in over 55 years. The awe and wonder of those coins of the luster and shine. Finding a couple of MS66's that laid dormiant all those years protected from all those years passing.

My greatest pride comes from the coins that I personally found in my search for the holy graille. I have another Presidential Business Strike registry set that will never win the top set they are all the ones I labored countless hours searching roll after roll. Those mean more to mean than all the First Day Issue ones that most I had to buy.

Another joy is taking a few of the new pennies and handing them out to people in the bank or post office or store and watch the eyes light up like you are giving them a million dollars. Perhaps that will make a lasting memory and they will "Pay it Forward". People really appreciate that little gesture especially knowing you want nothing in return.

Most dealers and all those corporations with deep pockets that invade our society never see the raw coins but only after they are graded. With no personal interaction or excitement in the hunt....the graded coins to them are just an investment or bragging rights. I am curious why on earth would those people ever bother with modern coins??? Do car or antique collectors buy new models? Not like the modern coins would ever net a hefty return in a few years.

Perhaps we can't stop those deep pockets because they will find a way around things. Deep down we know they are not getting really anything out of this hobby and they will never get it. Maybe NGC will see that someday and perhaps limit all collectors to the number of top set honors so there can be more to go around. Also....no collector lives forever......tee hee!!
