I just picked up a nice 1932 British halfpenny in 65 RB today. I'm now about 2/3 of the way towards finishing a nice date set for Grorge V halfpennies.Compared to US pieces, British pieces in nice red from the same period are quite scarce.

Many of my pieces came from the Baldwin Vault in London, where they were kept in pristine condition since their issue, in some cases well over a hundred years ago.

Baldwins has been in business as a coin dealer since 1872, but it's only in the last year or so that the contents of the Vault are being sold off.

That's a nice piece. Did you have it graded yourself? It seems like it is rare for them to sell anything graded. I picked up a couple of penny's recently from that era but they aren't as nice as this.

Thanks Chris B. I bought this already graded. You are right that it's hard to find these with a lot of red, unlike American pieces. My theory is that the English air was so polluted by coal during that period, a lot like China is today, that a lot of the bronze coins turned brown prematurely. I don't know if this came originally from the Baldwins Vault but some have recently , where they were kept since their issue and away from air. So far as I know, there were Edward VII and George V pieces kept there, with maybe a few Victorians.

Gem quality coins from that era are surprisingly scarce, so hold on to the ones you've got.

It could be that my new piece came from the Baldwin Vault as a lot of pieces from there may have been recently submitted to PCGS. I will have to cross this piece over to NGC if I want to put it in my Registry Set. What a pain in the a...
