My most recent NGC submission - it only took me 3 months to mail it off...

It took me nearly six months to decide what to send, but I have finally convinced myself to submit a few of my better raw pieces for grading. This submission is a bit complex as it spans seven invoices and requires a few special requests. Luckily, my contact at NGC was more than willing to help. As many of you know, I have a fair number of Soho pieces that have retained their original shells. When possible, I have made an effort always to have the shells encapsulated alongside the coin in a multi-coin holder. Doing so allows me to ensure that the shells are less likely to be separated from the coin. After all, it would indeed be a shame to lose such a unique piece of Soho history that has been carefully curated over the last two centuries. In total I am only sending in 17 pieces for grading, but there are 43 items listed on the submission forms when including the shells. On any note, I wanted to share the pieces I am sending in (at least the ones I have pictures of).

1.       1799 Great Britain proof Farthing with shells

Thank goodness for the $500 grading credit from the NGC registry awards last year. That combined with the account credit for my membership will help, but I will still have a relatively substantial bill coming my way once it is all done. I will be sure to post updates as they become available.

Feel free to do a GTG if you feel so inclined.

Absolutely splendid selection of coins and medals @coinsandmedals!  I had to pick my jaw up off of the floor when reading and viewing this post.  Kudos, and best of luck with the submissions.

The encapsulation of the shells along with the items is a brilliant idea!  This is the perfect use of the multi-holder.  I wonder if they'll attach numeric grades to the metal shells?  ;)

@brg5658 and @Revenant you both are far too kind!

To give you a better idea of what this would like, here are a few pictures (excluding the bar codes) of the pieces that NGC encapsulated for me back in 2019. It still amazes me that NGC is willing to take the time and effort to oblige a small-time collector such as myself. Unfortunately, these coins are not of the standard size accommodated by the multi-holders, so it takes some work to get them just right. This next batch should prove even more difficult given the different pedigrees.

Nah. It's very impressive stuff!

Side note, but I took 8 months to mail in a reholder submission because of CoVID and USPS anxiety. Don't feel too bad about 3 months with a very complex submission. lol

@Revenant, you win at eight months. I've had a submission sit on my desk for 4/5 months before, but I eventually get tired of it sitting there and find the time to drop it off.

@Woods020, thank you for your kind words!

Update: NGC has confirmed receipt of the package, but they have not opened it yet. What a sigh of relief.

@Just Bob you always have an open invitation if/when you find yourself in the area! You'll have to bring a few pieces from your collection when you come. You collect the type of oddities that I am not likely ever to see unless they are shared on these boards.

Well, you were lucky you weren't trying to use your membership credit.  I sent my medals in in May. NGC received the mail 5/27/21. Still haven't opened the mail. They said they expect to open it between  6/27 and 6/30. My credit expires 6/16 and NGC accounting says too bad but you will lose your credit and have to pay 100% because they are behind on doing their work of entering submissions in the system. How wonderful after years of being a member.

I feel your pain to a degree. I let a $500 award credit expire last year. It's the price we pay for procrastinating sometimes. lol Lesson learned I'm doing better this year. lol

The history in that submission is really quite staggering. The fact that there are survivors after 200 years in such excellent condition WITH shells is impressive. What a terrific submission and preservation project. Well done:golfclap:

Have you tried calling? I have always found NGC to be very flexible with stuff like this so long as it’s brought to their attention.

It might be worth giving NGC a call. The last time I spoke with someone from accounting they mentioned that they can roll these awards to the following year.

They usually have them expire after a year. I thought about asking about it last year / as it was expiring if they could roll it over, but, honestly, I'm the one that let it expire and they were giving me new $500 credits for NGC and PMG from New awards, so I decided I just needed to take my lumps on that one. lol

I'm glad things are finally moving along for you, Don!!! I'm excited to see how your submission turns out, too.  My submissions are kind of boring now......I really only send off stuff for my little resale venture.  I'll live vicariously through you!!!

@Mohawk I sincerely hope you'll share your submissions with us at some point. I always enjoy seeing what others submit. Should you come across any Soho pieces keep me in mind. The opportunity to buy from a trusted source is always much welcomed event!

Hey Don!!

If I do see any nice Soho, I'll definitely let you know!!! As far as submissions....well...with what I actually collect, those don't happen anymore.  But I'll definitely be sharing my collection with you guys!! I keep on chasing Faustina, and she keeps being a rewarding numismatic muse, for sure!

Update: I received another call from my contact at NGC last week, and things are starting to progress quickly now. Three of the invoices are already in the grading/encapsulation/imaging stage! I will be sure to update this journal as more information becomes available.

Side note: Things seem to be moving pretty quickly at NGC now. A dealer friend just submitted a medal on my behalf under the early bird tier. Including shipping to and from it only took 29 business days. The published turnaround time is 36 business days, which doesn't include shipping time to and from. It still hasn't been 36 business days, and I now have the coin in hand after being shipped to me from the dealer. Now that's a pretty quick turnaround!

Glad your coins are moving through quickly Don, can't wait to see the results. (thumbsu

I fear my own submissions are going to linger for quite a while. When I saw the turnaround time for the Modern tier go from 64 to 85 days and the Economy from 54 to 71 yesterday I pretty much relinquished any hope of seeing the coins before the end of the year. At least 2022 will start off on a good note. lol

I would say that's true of everything except the World Modern and World Economy tiers. My Zimbabwe coins have been in Grading / Encapsulation for over 2 weeks at this point. I don't know what is going on with the lower world tiers but something is broken when turnarounds get over 70-80 working days.

I'm guessing they're getting higher volume than usual and / or other stuff keeps getting sent in in higher tiers and bumping back the lower stuff, or both.

Side note: But that 17 has to be a typo that someone was trying to put a 71 in for. lol Which is a bit hilarious.

Oh wow, I did not check the turnaround times for the modern and economy tiers. I submitted an economy invoice to be shipped with the larger order, so we may get our things back at the same time. I suppose 2022 might start well for both of us!
