The addition of PCGS coins to U.S. Competitive Registry Sets.

I don’t know what other collectors think about NGC’s new policy but as for myself I think it’s good for these coins to be included.I don’t have many PCGS coins in my collection but I do have some I would like to add to my current Registry Type Set. I was able to use my PCGS coins in my Custom Set but not in any Registry Sets.To me this policy made no sense so I was glad to see the change.

I would like to know what my fellow collectors think about this new policy both good and bad.

By the way this is my first journal entry and a new area of the Collector’s Society I decided to explore.

I think that reversing what was a very unpopular decision a couple of years ago is a good thing, however it also has a downside.  One of the real issues with the NGC registry was that too many sets; many top ranked sets; were/are 100% PCGS graded coins, so NGC is giving registry awards for sets that have no NGC coins in them.  That is the issue that should have been addressed then and still needs to be addressed now.

I most definitely agree with you and you are correct to point this out. However,I believe that in order to be eligible for awards a Registry Set must now be comprised of 75% or more of its coins being NGC graded and the Set must be at least 50% or more complete at the time they are being judged. Therefore, the great majority of the coins must be NGC Coins.

Correct, but that 75% rule applies to the Major Awards that get the plaques and the $500 grading credit.

For the smaller category awards, each US category gets 2 awards - "Best in Category," which considers everything, and "NGC Best in Category," which only coins points for NGC graded coins. A 100% PCGS set can still win "Best in Category," but not "NGC Best in Category."

To clarify I am referring to the category awards, especially the best in category award as opposed to the awards that have dollar value.  While not a huge thing it would make more sense to make the best in category the one given for only NGC graded points and call the mixed award something else like best combined award or whatever.  To me best in category sounds more prestigious and should be used for the only NGC scores, but maybe I'm way overthinking it lol.

I didn’t realize the rest of the awards picture and now that you’ve  clarified this for me I agree that a mixed award should have a label which points out the difference.A NGC/PCGS Best in Category Combined Award label would differentiate between an All NGC Best in Category Award. I don't think you are overthinking this.

No, it's an interesting point. In World categories there are no PCGS coins and so "Best in Category" is the only award and is defacto NGC only.

That is correct for World Coins but maybe a differentiated award for the US categories should exist because you now have this mix of NGC and PCGS Coins.

Now the picture appears to be a little clearer. Today the ANA announced that they will have their own registry through NGC to include PCGS and NGC coins. I wonder if this will eventually open things up to PCGS world coins being included in the registry also.

I highly suspect that this is going to *eventually* replace the NGC registry and I'm not going to be surprised if 2020 proves to be the last year of the NGC Registry Awards with the ANA Registry Awards taking over in 2021.

NGC is footing the bill for this new registry and those new registry awards / categories are copied verbatim from the NGC Registry awards - even the bit about "over $20,000 in prizes." NGC is not going to continue developing and upgrading our 2 year old, half-complete "new" registry while they're also rolling out a new "cutting edge" registry for the ANA.

Yeah, the NGC registry is going to stay at NGCcoin.com - for a while / for now. Just like the fact that we still have the old collector's society page for the "old" registry while we have the half-complete "new" registry. But they're going to port / replicate all the NGC registry sets over there, and it makes no sense to maintain both of those systems, with all of that redundancy, long term once the ANA registry is up and running. It makes no sense to bother finishing this "new" registry when you're also going to have that one and everything here is going to be moved over there.

After the article came up about NGC suing that company for cheating them out of 5 Million I speculated that we might see a "NEW new Registry" because NGC might not be able to finish rolling out a registry based on that company's incomplete work - if that company really was working on the registry. This makes me think maybe I was right.

I'd love to be wrong, because I don't want to see this place go and I don't want to see this place lose its identity to become part of the ANA, but I seriously think I'm going to be right.

That sounds like a very distinct possibility. I’m curious to know more of the particulars to this venture.Who will maintain and pay to support this data base and will NGC or the ANA have the computer hardware and software along with the necessary personnel to continue to operate the registry? There are many questions that need to be asked. Will this be an added burden and expense for the ANA as a non profit organization to assume and will this affect the NGC App or Census or Price Guides?Hopefully all this will be explained in greater detail by both NGC and the ANA and whatever is done will be for both the benefit of the hobby and the collector!

Thank you for your concerns, but there are absolutely no plans to eventually phase out the NGC Registry. We’ve made a lot of investments in the NGC Registry over the last year and with this announcement we will be devoting even more resources towards making the NGC Registry and the ANA Registry the best possible platforms for collectors. It’s not difficult for us to support a shared database – we already host the NGC Registry on NGCcoin.com, NGCcoin.cn, NGCcoin.hk and NGCcoin.hk, all using a shared database. Whether you choose to use the NGC Registry or the ANA Registry or both, you can expect to see lots of new and improved features in the near future. Stay tuned for more information in the coming months as we continue to develop the NGC Registry and ANA Registry.

Thank you for providing some additional clarity to what is a very muddy water.  Just a suggestion but perhaps it would be wise to post this information on (at the very least) the thread in the registry section to address the questions like these that collectors are asking but not receiving any answers to.

For some time I have been building a Kennedy silver proof set. I had managed to be in the top 10. Then suddenly I noticed a serious slip. I didn't do any analysis until recently. The 1964 coins can be tough, but the problem is that allowing PCGS coins permits folks to add 1976 PF 70 dcam coins. There only THREE NGC coins grades PF 70 ucam. It seems virtually all the top pointed sets have the pcgs coin. In order to have a top set, you must add a PCGS coin.

I have long felt that NGC was more critical when it came to proof coins. Just as I think PCGS is more critical of luster on mint state coins.  Maybe it is a misplaced opinion. But given the disparity between the two systems on this single coin, there has to be some difference.

It would be nice if NGC would create an identical competitive set that only allowed NGC coins. Then we don't have to go out and get one odd coin to compete.
