Hello and Welcome Daniel.

PCGS graded coins are not allowed in NGC's Competitive Registry sets any longer.  However, you can still add PCGS graded coins to Custom Sets.  Some PCGS coins which were already in Competitive Sets of U.S. coins at the time the decision was made to disallow PCGS coins were grandfathered in.  Those are the only PCGS graded coins that can be in Competitive Sets now.

When I was active on this forum in the 2010-2012 timeframe, NGC allowed PCGS coins in their competitive sets while PCGS did not allow NGC slabs in their sets.  I always felt NGC was implying some kind of inferiority to PCGS by allowing PCGS coins in their competitive sets.  I am glad NGC changed their policy in that regard.  It feels like NGC has grown up and become confident in their marketplace standing.

Hi and welcome. I have sets that could go on compatible sets but I chose custom. Any set has the capability of winning but I like to share my good coins before I learned about PCGS being the most liberal graders there are. Very big difference. That's why I stopped. Now the sets I have in NGCI can put into the competitive sets maybe I will. I don't no. It's up to you. Enjoy.

I always thought it was great of them and showed that they made this place to be for the collectors - to let collector's share what they love and make it more about the coins and the love of the hobby and not the plastic. I always thought it was just an acknowledgement of the fact that PCGS did good / good enough and they were willing to accept them on par - not a statement that PCGS was better.

Not trying to gripe about the change or say I disagreed with it. Just saying I always thought it was great / nice thing to do for the collectors that reflected well on them, not poorly, when they allowed people to do that.

On the flip side, I always thought it made PCGS seem somewhat elitist, money-hungry and self-interested, among other things, when they weren't willing to reciprocate / return the favor and let people have NGC coin in their registry while NGC was allowing it. At the end of the day though, it is their registry, their site, that they pay for, so it's their prerogative to use it to promote / emphasize their product / service, so I never judged them too harshly for it.

The purpose of every company is to stay in business and make a profit.  Maybe I was too harsh in stating that NGC was acting like they felt inferior to PCGS.  Since they were considered the less successful and slightly younger version of PCGS at that time, maybe they thought by attracting PCGS slab holders, they could attract new business that they might not have attracted otherwise.  So, PCGS is protecting its strong position buy barring NGC, while NGC is trying to carve out a bigger market share by stealing some PCGS loyalists.
