Rest in Peace Bob Sr.

As they say, “when it rains it pours.”

My step-father's father, Bob Wright passed away yesterday. I can’t say it came as a complete shock, but the timing was still surprising. I spent as much of the day as I could with my Step-father on Friday (3/28) while still making it back to my side of town to get my son from daycare – we live about 45 miles away from each other.

The loss of Choya’s mother was the instigation for building the 1932 mint set and the other birthyear sets that we made around 2008 and 2009. The description for the set that I wrote heavily emphasized her and that point as a result, but 1932 is also the birth year for his father so we always knew that set would ultimately pull double-duty and it was another reason to build it up with high-grade coins. In the description I wrote:

“1932 is also the birth year for Choya’s father. Hopefully he'll be with us for several years to come yet.”

I wrote that (I think) in the early months of either 2009, maybe 2010, so right around 9 or 10 years ago (I think the “history” tab only goes back to early 2010 and doesn’t reflect / indicate changes that don’t change the score so it’s hard to tell looking back at it now). Looking at it like that, I guess I mostly got my wish, but, it’s never long enough, and it’s never going to be.

We’ll be getting an obituary written up for him soon and I’ll probably use some or all of that as the basis for updating the description of the 1932 mint set. That’ll be the first time I’ve made any meaningful changes to that set in the last 9-10 years and it’ll probably be one of the last times I update the set for quite a while. That said, I do want to get the coins from my step-father at some point and take new photos to update that part of the set’s presentation. My abilities with the camera have come an extremely long way in the last 10 years and I think I can significantly improve the presentation of that set.

I feel very much aware of the “cycle of life” lately – 6 week old premie babies, the passing of one of the last members of a prior generation, watching my step-father prepare for a funeral and thinking about the a day in the future when we’ll start to see more members of his generation pass and it will be myself and my siblings and cousins making the preparations. I frequently think about and see parallels in my interactions with my son vs my own childhood.

I was very close to my Father, after he passed in 1991, I put together a 1916 coin set to honor his birth year,  it is on display in my Man-Corner.  I am sorry to hear of your Family's loss, the "cycle of life" does indeed spin for all of us.

My prayers of comfort go out to you and your family during this difficult time. Yesterday, upon hearing the news I perused your 1932 mint set in honor of your step-father's father. In a strange way I had a connection with that set in that I notified you that it won the best presented award. That has always been a fond memory of mine that I immediately thought of when I heard the news.

Yes, indeed. I remember that as well. I was still early in grad school and that had kept me so busy I don't think I'd even thought about this place much in about a year when your message popped up in my inbox. I've been looking at that set recently as well and it contains a number of now somewhat dated references. It might warrant a bit of reworking in the near future just to bring it into the current decade.

I don't know if you remember this but you were also involved / helped me find the PCGS graded MS67 1875 Netherlands 10G coin that became the first coin in that set, even though it no longer appears in my NGC registry.

I'm very sorry for your loss.  I've checked out your 1932 mint set several times and I appreciate the thought and effort that went into building it.

Man, I'm really sorry to hear about Choya's dad.  As you mentioned it is the cycle of life and it's a part of nature.....but it's the part of it that sucks.  I'm not religious, as you know, and I view death as the greatest mystery of all but you and yours have my deepest condolences.

Maybe this is a good time to revisit the 1932 set with Choya and revamp the photos and description as you mentioned.  I've seen the set, and it is very nice and it is a great tribute.  Now, as you said, it will be pulling double duty, so it may be nice and cathartic to do some work on it, even if you do not add anymore coins right now.  The coins you have are great!

I know what you mean about the cycle of life.  My fiancee's grandmother is 90, and we've noticed some cognitive decline happening with her in the past few months.  That's been really hard on her dad (it's her paternal grandmother), and it's really made me think somewhat too.  It's crazy for me to think that my dad is going to be 70 this year and my mom will be 70 next year.  I'm feeling the number 40 looming for me in 2020 as well.  No matter what we do, the seasons pass and we get older and move along the path nature has for us.

I am sorry for your loss. The death of someone close, and your new son's struggle for life can certainly make one think about their own mortality.
