The Youngest Numismatist

The newest "Young Numismatist" fifteen hour old baby Blake admires his first coins a 2012 American Eagle San Francisco Two-Coin Silver Proof Set. When the 2012 American Eagle San Francisco Two-Coin Silver Proof Sets went on sale I ordered a set for each of my grandchildren. The coins arrived on July 31, 2012 at 4:30 PM. Our newest grandchild, baby Blake, was born a few hours later at 11:03 PM. When my wife and I went to the hospital to visit we presented our grandson his first coins the n

Numismatic Time Machine

With the ANA World's Fair of Money opening in Philadelphia today it's fun to imagine what it would be like hop on a numismatic time machine and visit the 1908 ANA Philadelphia Convention. Of course no visit to an ANA convention in the city of brotherly love would be complete without a visit to the Philadelphia Mint and an opportunity to bring home some souvenirs from the mint gift shop. If you could visit the mint's gift shop during the 1908 convention and had twenty dollars to spend what would

A Very Special Delivery!

When the 2012 American Eagle San Francisco Two-Coin Silver Proof Sets went on sale I ordered a set for each of my grandchildren. This included a set for the newest addition to our family who was not expected until August 7th. According to the UPS Track and confirm the sets are expected to be delivered today. I just received a text from my daughter that she is in the hospital and that baby is expected today. When my wife and I go to the hospital to visit we will present our newest grandson a

All of my Registry Sets are now 100% Illustrated and Described!

When I established my 2012 numismatic goals and objectives I set a goal of having an "Owner's Description" and image for 100% of the coins in my "Competitive and Custom Registry Sets". I am pleased to announce that as of last night this goal has been accomplished. All 125 coins in my "Competitive Registry Sets" have an "Owner's Description" and at least a low resolution image. In addition all of the coins in my "Custom Registry Sets" have an "Owner's Description" and image. Now that I have

Re-Shuffling My USA/Philippines Type Sets

Playing with the new "Filter Ranking" application can be really addicting. When I saw that my USA/Philippines Type Set ranked number one when viewed through the "NGC Coins" filter I began to wonder if I could build a 100% complete NGC set, with the coins that I already owned, without sacrificing the quality and eye appeal of my "All Coins" set. Before the re-shuffling my USA/Philippines Type Set had 25,623 Registry Points and ranked 2nd when viewed with the "All Coins" filter. The set conta

The Other Side of the Rainbow

The reverse of this 1903 Half Centavo PR65 RB, from the Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection, has beautiful multi-color (red, green, blue, and purple) toning. The toning pattern on this coin is very complex and changes as the coin is viewed from different angles. Capturing the ever changing colors of this specimen was a real challenge. Imagine trying to photograph the hologram on one of your credit cards. The photograph attached to this journal was taken outdoors using natural overcast

Gorgeous Rainbow Toned Proof

This fabulous rainbow toned GEM is from the Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection. The obverse has red toned central features and a rainbow of iridescent gold, red, purple, peacock blue, and green in the fields. The reverse is red, green, blue and purple toned. It is gorgeous and the pictures do not do it justice. Although this coin is technically graded as RB there is actually no brown on either the obverse or reverse, only red and gorgeous multi-color toning. There is an interesting "Beauty

Pedigreed Coins

All of the USA/Philippines coins in this "Custom Set" have famous pedigrees. In addition each coin has spectacular eye appeal. LOUIS E. ELIASBERG SR. COLLECTION Louis Eliasberg (1896-1976) accomplished what no one had accomplished before or since. He built a collection of regular issue United States coins comprising all then-known dates and mint marks. He is the only person to ever build a complete set of U.S. coins. Live Free or Die - July 14, 1790

The French National Day (La Fête Nationale) or Bastille Day is celebrated on July 14th. This 1792 Five Sols tradesman token depicts the Storming of the Bastille (July 14, 1789) and the establishment of the short-lived constitutional monarchy in France. The lettering on the obverse reads: Vivre Libres Ou Mourir -- 14 Juillet 1790 (Live Free or Die -- July 14, 1790) The obverse depicts a seated liberty wearing a helmet, a shield with three fleur-de-lis at her side, holding a scroll represent

Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection - 1903 One Centavo PR66 RD (The Other Side of the Coin)

This full blazing red Superb GEM is the finest proof One Centavo that I have ever seen. Philippine expert and author Neil Shafer describes this specimen as "a fabulous coin, just a wonderful beauty". This coin is absolutely breathtaking with pristine deep mirror fields. Conservatively graded by PCGS it could just as easily have graded PR66 RD + or PR67 RD. The attached picture really does not do this coin justice. It fails to capture the blazing red color and wonderful eye appeal of this

Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection - 1903 One Centavo PR66 RED (Full Blazing Red)

Full Blazing Red GEM PROOF One Centavos are ULTRA RARE and this specimen is among the finest that has been offered in many years. In the past five years this is the first time that I have seen a PR66 Red One Centavo offered at a major auction. As soon as I saw this rare beauty I knew that it had to be mine. All One Centavo proofs in full red are truly special coins. This is clearly demonstrated by the NGC and PCGS population reports. If you look at the total number of One Centavo proofs graded

The Rare 1908 Proof Set had a Mintage of Only 500 Sets

1908 was the last year that USA/Philippine proof sets were produced and the only year that the reduced size and weight silver coins (Ten Centavos,Twenty Centavos, Fifty Centavos, and Peso) were struck in Proof. Five hundred 1908 USA/Philippine Proof sets were minted. The seven coin 1908 USA/Philippine Proof set (Half Centavo, Centavo, Five Centavos, Ten Centavos, Twenty Centavos, Fifty Centavos, and Peso) was produced at the Philadelphia Mint. Since no business strikes of USA/Philippine coins

Introducing my 1903 Proof Set

My 1903 USA/Philippines Proof Set is one of the highlights of my collection. I am delighted that NGC has finally created a competitive category for this set. Please visit and enjoy the photos and descriptions. 1903 was the first year of issue for United States coinage for the Philippine Islands. Coins were issued in seven denominations; Half Centavo, One Centavo, Five Centavos, Ten Centavos, Twenty Centavos, Fifty Centavos, and Peso. Proof Sets consisting of one coin of each denomination were

NGC Creates New Categories of Competitive Registry Sets

Attention USA/Philippine collectors. NGC has created five new categories of competitive registry sets specifically for us. The additional categories are 1903 Proof Set, 1904 Proof Set, 1905 Proof Set, 1906 Proof Set, and 1908 Proof Set. One of the things that I really love about NGC is how responsive they are to consumer input. Last week I phoned NGC and suggested that the Registry add additional categories for each of the five years that USA/Philippines Proof Sets were issued. Within twe

Promises Kept

The United States is not the only nation that celebrates the fourth of July as their Independence Day. The Republic of the Philippines was born on July 4, 1946. When the United States defeated Spain in the Spanish-American war of 1898, the Philippines became a United States possession. During the Spanish Colonial Period (1565 - 1898) Spain maintained a very one sided relationship with the Philippines and showed no interest in preparing the Philippine people for self governance. Tragedy Narrowly Averted

EXTREMELY RARE Proof Coins from the Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection almost lost due to USPS foul-up. I was elated last month when I won four gorgeous lots of Proof coins at the Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection Auction. The highlights of my winnings were a 1905 Five Centavos PR65, 1906 Ten Centavos PR66, and two truly irreplaceable coins a 1903 PR66 RD Half Centavo, and 1903 PR66 RD One Centavo. My check cleared some time ago so I have been anxiously waiting for my treasures to a

Ancient Scandinavian Coin with Ancestor's Portrait - The Other Side of the Coin

This is the other side of the coin issued by my wife's ancestor Thorri Snaersson, King of Kvenland, Finland and Gothland (320 AD - 344 AD). My wife is a direct decendent of King Thorri. The Kings of England, Finland and Noway, as well as the Earls of Orkney, and Dukes of Normandy, are direct decendents of King Thorri. Ancient Scandinavian Coin with Ancestor's Portrait

Genealogy and numismatics combined in a "perfect storm" of knowledge when my son discovered pictures of an ancient Scandinavian coin bearing the portrait of one of his ancestors. My son has been actively researching our family genealogy for several years and has been very successful in tracing back our family history. Recently he had a breakthrough that enabled him to trace one branch of my wife's family to the second century Kings of Kvenland. Before the emergence of the modern Scandinavia

Carson City Silver

The recent NumisMedia Market Report on the Carson City Mint brought back memories of my very first Carson City coin, an 1878 CC Silver Dollar that I found in circulation during the summer of 1962. http://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?NewsletterNewsArticleID=1697 When I was in high school during the early 1960's, I worked in a factory over the summer break. Every week, when I cashed my pay check, I would ask the bank teller for a roll of Silver Dollars. When I got home, I would look fo

Remembering Dad

My father belonged to the "Greatest Generation". During World War ll he served in the U.S. Army in the Southwest Pacific where he participated in the New Guinea, Luzon, and Southern Philippine campaigns. When he returned from the war he brought back with him examples of coins and notes from Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines as well as some amazing Kodachrome slides he took during the war. Even though many decades have passed since my father first showed me the coins and notes he col

Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection - 1906 Ten Centavos PCGS PR66 (1714 Registry Points)

"Evenly and beautifully blue toned obverse, more brilliant but lovely shades of golden toning on reverse. An exquisite offering of a rare coin" One item that was high on my want list from the Pineda Collection was a beautifully toned large size Ten Centavos in PR66 or above. The Pineda auction actually had four coins that met that criterion. They were Lot # 5560 -1903 Ten Centavos PR66 (1278 Registry Points), Lot #5564 -- 1904 Ten Centavos PR66 (1423 Registry Points), Lot # 5572 -- 1906 Ten

Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection - 1905 Five Centavos PR 65 (1623 Registry Points)

The 1905 Five Centavos is a PROOF ONLY ISSUE with a miniscule mintage of only 471 coins. Of the 471 pieces made, this has to be one of the very best. It is beautiful! I was very pleased to be the high bidder on this outstanding piece in last week's Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection Auction. All Philippine proof coins are rare particularly in GEM quality but none are rarer or more alusive than 1905 proof coins. The 2008 Allen guide book lists the 1905 Five Centavos in PF65 at $550.00 how

Philippine Auction of the Century Conducted at Memphis IPMS This Evening

The Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection is without doubt the finest collection of rare Philippine notes, coins, medals, and historical documents ever assembled. I just spent the last six and a half hours glued to my computer participating in the auction via Knight Live and was blown away by the many unique and Top Pop specimens. The Notes and Spanish-Philippine coins included many rare museum quality specimens and the U.S. Philippine coins and medals were truely unbelievable. The highlig

2012 American Eagle San Francisco Two-Coin Silver Proof Set

Mint web site and phone lines overwhelmed with orders for the 2012 American Eagle San Francisco Two-Coin Silver Proof Set. At exactly 12:00 Noon Eastern Standard Time I went on line to place my 2012 American Eagle San Francisco Two-Coin Silver Proof Set order. It took me a long time to even connect with the mint web site and seemingly forever to proceed from page to page in the order process. All told the process took forty-nine minutes. I also tried to telephone in my order but never got thr
