Acorns to Oaks, or should it be "coins in the fountain"?

Mint and Proof sets, a stack of them... Should they be graded? I have Proof sets, Eisenhower Dollars, dated 1776-1976 with the Kennedy half, and the usual shrapnel that accompanies them, [quarter, dime, nickel & penny]. A separate Eisenhower dollar 1973, a mint set 1/4, nickel, dime and two pennies, a 1970 Kennedy half, with 1/4, nickel, dime, one penny. A 1979 set with Kennedy, and an SBA dollar. [2 of those]. And 2 Eisenhower sets from 1973. All remain in the celophane envelopes an

IN WITH THE OLD (part 2)

15 More Little Indians... I have just completed my third set of the $2.50 Indians of the 1908 - 1929 series. Now I have three complete sets, of the 15 coin set broken by the years the mints did not turn them out. The rarity and desire for these coins are pushing Indian 2.5 dollar gold coin values higher. At the high end of the scale is the 1911-D, the rarest date, this old US gold coins value is Over $15000, when you can find one. With one rare date, and one near rare in the series, t

Roman coins

Now, are they improperly cleaned? Attention all hoarders: I have just came into 6 Roman coins. I can't read Latin, and have no time to search out a 'Pope' to read them for me...But my main question is,How can you tell if these were improperly cleaned, or otherwise messed with? #2 is, Are they real? I looked on line for how to clean a coin and their answers were frigtening. Methinks they are asking you to destroy value, while talking about preserving value. I don't need to clean the co

COIN SHOW RESULTS

THE SHOW WAS VERY BUSY, MY REGISTRY WILL SHOW I went to two coin shows this past weekend, one in New Port Richey, Fl., and one [the nation's largest coin club] in W. Palm Beach. I hope you all had a nice wxend. I went to two coin shows, (had two tables at each) one in New Port Richey, Fl., and one in W.Palm Beach. May I add that the one in Palm Beach is the nations largest coin club. I have been in Florida since 1968 and long ago have learned that September is the quietest month and this was

OUT WITH THE NEW

Huge coin exchange happening today. Well, today I am completing another big trade. Out go about 40 of my modern coins. My collection is being reduced by quite a bit selling off the newer ones, adding some oldies, and getting an amount of cash for the coin show coming up in January in Orlando. Just in case some folks there have some goodies I can't live without, I am going to be prepared to adopt them. I may attempt to expand my Indians or find a new shining star to follow. I also am lookin

USING I-PHONE FOR COIN PHOTO

Hope you get an Oscar I left all directions on my comment on the last journal by gherrmann44 OKAY: Here is the body, so you do not have to run to gherrmann44 if you do not want to. I left an eloquent note on how I have learned to do my photos for NGC notes, journals and the registry if not ETC. Unfortunately, my note was lost when I attempted to add it to this reply section, I had written what follows, so I hope this re-do is as wonderful . I had worked with a production company as

Beware of criminal coin dealers (Part II)

I have returned from vacation and here is where it stands. I will still not mention names, as we (the dealer in question) and I had another conversation on the phone regarding the transaction in question and it is not resolved as yet. The fellow on the selling end has left it with, I will get back to you. again. That is fine, I have documented the situation and time is on my side. I simply told him that I want my money back or I will take steps. I outlined some of my abilities to plead my

A GRADE BY ANY OTHER NAME

Question everything? This is a journal to continue a thread after the previous journal by hightidetech posted 3/19/15 titled, Digital Imaging for a new generation of numismatists.... I replyed: A grade by any other name: I use that old saying regarding a rose as a reality check for our graded coins. One can alway hire a lawyer and plead a case and convince a jury of peers that a rose is a peach blossom or some other flower, but in reality it is still a rose. If the accepted graders sa

THE FIRST AMERICAN COIN

Is it true, legend, or fancy? Only her hairdresser knows for sure. Have you heard this popular legend? Copper bands surrounding wooden kegs of gunpowder from the American Revolution were used as coin strips to punch the blanks used in the creation of the first American coin, the Flowing Hair, Chain Reverse Large Cent. A second reverse design featuring a wreath was produced in 1793. The first Large Cent, Flowing Hair, Wreath Reverse, was minted by the Philadelphia Mint in 1793. It was the fi

So far So good...

The new website for NGC.. I like it so far. Was having a little bit of difficulty in the beginning, with loading etc, but seems it is flying low, and rising. (kinda like gold)Anyway, I seem to be getting the hang of it, and can offer no suggestions. Good move so far. Have to inspect several areas yet. Thanks NGC Capt. Just back from the F.U.N Show in Orlando again

Eye candy of the 3rd kind.. Hello again: Just back from the Orlando FUN exibit. This is a local club, not as big as the main show in January,or the one coming up in Boston in August but I had a lot of fun and learned a bit with my short available time there. I met with PCGS people, very nice, but seems I can get precisely what I want with staying with NGC and it is less paperwork too. I accept into my orphanage, for now, only NGC and PCGS, although, I guess some of the other grading comp

Work, Work, Work!

Man, I'm getting a cramp from typing... Photos are driving me to the nuthouse, but I keep finding the mistakes I am making,so getting easier and quicker at adding coins to the registry. With working, and fending off tropical storms, chores and a few etc's, I hope to have all the coins entered by Sunday evening... Very happy with NGC's effort to find all the info I need to know all there is to know about these coins, each has a pedigree and a wonderful history, from artwork to the path each c

I have run into a logjam. I want the others. APB on them. I am attempting to get all of the 29 1987 G$10 MS 70's. 1829 $2.5 Gold...

Hello: want to sell ungraded Capped Head mintage 3403 Hello: Interested in selling 1829 (mintage 3403) $2.5 Quarter Eagle in likely AU-50 or 55 condition. Understand, I am a new collector going on only two years knowledge. I use a grading book and compared to other coins I own of various grades and determine this would grade out at AU50-55. I feel very strongly. My friend who owns it seems to want to grade it, but I feel perhaps we should sell it as is. Will entertain any offers. Than

Roman Numeral Gold Eagles are HOT

The Hunt For Gold October Today, the adult ice cream truck arrived. Very late too. Tomorrow I am heading to Chicago for a wedding, and was waiting with a dripping mouth for my 1990 $25 MS70. The truck was supposed to be here before 4:30 and by almost 6:40 it was still not here. So, on the way out of my neighborhood, there came the brown van, with a harried looking driver. I blinked my lights and waved frantically, as I knew the coin was on the truck. Well, he was in a big hurry and th

Enjoying NGC

Enjoying the benifits of others knowledge and expertise Hello all: Again I profess to be needing help regarding buying, selling, focusing on numismatics. When I acquire my coins I do not always buy just the ones I want for my "keeper collection" but occaisionally get some for trading or simply selling. If any of you have the time to look over my "stash" [as I call it] and have any advice on a direction I may should take, I am open to suggestions. I just went through a give and take with

Odd coins in the registry, and lost slots

Friends from Australia, trying to help but... HI Had one of our associates ask me to relieve myself of one of the foreign slots held by my coins, but I do have the coin and NGC has not yet made a slot for them. Sorry, I do want mine in the registry and was told nicely and understandably, "gotta wait" til prior request keyed in. Hope all you Aussies understand, workin' on it here. First Strikes

Are "First Strikes" more desireable, and more valuable? I was to understand that even though the "First Strike" [blue label] coins were not from the mints 'first strikes', but the first coins to be graded by the graders during the first month of issue. In addition, I understood, that the 'first few coins' could have clearer images than those struck with worn dies. I am sure the difference is minute, but so is differences between PF/MS 69's to '70's. ANY comment supporting or defacing this

Registry points and values

Will the real value please stand up. I recently wrote about my registry points and collection value falling through the floor. I also, recently. responded to a comment in a recent journal conversation, it follows: Well, I still have some more work to do [on my registry]. Guess I sent off some of the wrong coins and kept some here. So I deleted the three I left here, sent them off today and have not added back in the three I sent by mistake. Not sure what they are. Smaller gold coins hidden away for a long time Hello again fellow collectors: Well, I was so enthused by the first four coins I had graded as a test grade for the 40 coins I have been hiding for a long time.
