2017 Goals

Going To Finish Some Sets Hello everyone. I hope you all had a great Christmas. I got some proof sets from family members, to add to my collection, so I was very happy. In the coming year, I am looking to put a bow on some of the sets I haven't worked on in awhile. Here are my goals for 2017: 1. Finish my Ike set. 2. Finish my Washington quarter set (1932 - 1964) 3. Finish my Presidential proof set, even though I hate that the mint started making reverse proofs at the end of the

Christmas Success

A little early... As you know, I am trying to get some of my cousins' kids interested in coins. I sent my cousins Sonia and Claudia each a proof set, an album for holding 2x2s and Sacagawea folders, in addition to $5 worth of cent rolls. I didn't wrap the cents and they tore through those trying to fill holes in the folders I got them this summer. Everything else was wrapped and they will open those Christmas Day. My cousin sent me video and pictures and they seemed legitimately excited.

Great Week At Work

Found some great coins Good morning, everyone. So as you know, I work at a bank and enjoy the amount of cash that I have access to. This week was particularly fun. On Tuesday, I had to open a box of nickels, so I opened the flaps and looked at the coins at the end of that roll. Nothing. I then flipped the box over, lifted it and started examining the coins on the other end of the rolls. Wouldn't you know it, I saw a big P staring at me. I don't remember the year, because the coin is dow

End of 2016

Reflection As we work our way toward the end of 2016, the polls have closed so to speak, for the Registry Awards. Good luck to everyone with their competitive sets! I look back at my collecting year and it has been a good one. I pushed my Morgan Dollar collection over 25% complete and am down to my last 3 coins in my Jefferson Proof collection. I have recently added a few coins to my Type Set and am enjoying buying coins for it that are outside what I am normally collecting. I am workin

2012 Proof Sets

Did I miss something?! I was on Ebay shopping for Proof sets for my Goddaughter and her sister. Her sister was born in 2012 and proof sets are going for $100+ Did I miss something? Are the Presidential Dollars made with gold, or did these not sell in any sort of quantity from the mint in 2012?   Marcus To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Opinions, please

I'm puzzled.... Good evening. I have this bill sitting in my vault at work and it is puzzling me. The bill is not crisp from a pack, but is not in bad condition. It has a line where it appears the ink never hit. I thought it was a crease line, but in looking at it, I can't see at the top or bottom where a crease reaches the edge. Can anyone shed light on what I might be looking at here? Thank you.   Marcus To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be

Jefferson Proof Nickels

Almost Finished I just added a few more coins to this collection, bringing me to five coins needed to complete this collection. It's one I have been working on for a couple of years and I will be happy to finally finish it. I am looking to close out a few sets that I am almost finished with, so I can concentrate on my Morgan Dollars, Commemoratives and my Type Set.   Happy collecting, everyone. Spreading the Numismatic Word

Gifts for the young I am SLOWLY getting caught up on numismatic gifts for my cousins' children. (Curses of having such a large family) My Goddaughter's birthday recently passed, so I ordered her something her mom said she was into (Some beads that you place on a board, then fuse together with an iron) and a 2007 Proof set from the year she was born. Another cousin had her son last year, so I bought him a 2015 Proof set. He turns 1 next month, so I will be caught up with him. My goal is

My Collecting Budget

Is not quite big enough..... When I was in middle and high school, back in the 90s, my Dad and I went all over Texas, visiting baseball card shows. I collected cards back then, but we really got into meeting Hall of Fame players and getting autographs. Yogi Berra, Brooks and Frank Robinson, Willie Mays, etc. When the strike happened in 1995, the shows dried up. My Dad was working on an early 60s Al Kaline endorsed glove that we had gotten a bunch of signatures on. He has since given it t

It's Been Awhile

Other things taking up my coin budget Good evening, everyone. It's been awhile since I posted on here. I am surprising my wife with a Mediterranean cruise next year. I am telling her about it at Christmas, so wish me luck in not letting the secret slip. Because of that, I have not purchased any coins in the last couple of months. But, I am breaking my hiatus to go to the Whitman show in Baltimore on Friday, since my vacation happened to fall the week of the show. Pure dumb luck. Hap

Petition For Change

Time to redesign our coinage Hello everyone. I wanted to see if I could get your support for a change to our coinage. As President Roosevelt did in 1907, I think it is time to redesign our circulating coinage. The $10 bill is going to feature a woman in 2020, but it will share circulation with the Hamilton $10 bill. In an effort to show progressiveness in both diversity and women's equality in America, I propose that the coins from the cent to the half dollar be redesigned back to the cla

Introducing Coins To My Second Cousins

A good start. We had a housewarming today, for the house my wife and I bought in January. My cousin David and his wife Angela were there with their two kids. When the kids looked like they were getting bored, I pulled out the Lincoln coin folders I had gotten them. I wasn't exactly sure how to introduce it, so I asked, "Do you want to see something cool?" They thought it was cool when I pulled out the rolls of cents. We layed down in the floor (something my back cursed me out for late

This Week In Coins

Slow Week At The Bank This week at the bank, I wasn't able to find much. I got four wheaties and nothing else. I did find out however that my Operations Specialist collects a bit also. When she went to audit a teller at a different branch, she found a $1 and $10 silver certificate in his mutilated money, because they were old. ) That was a nice find for her. Yesterday, JPs Corner delivered 14 Lincoln 1959 - 1998 Harris Coin Folders. I have a huge family. That's just for my second cous

Spreading The Numismatic Word

Through multiple channels. I have had so much fun over the last few months talking to my coworkers about coins that I have decided that I would like to try to get more people interested. I am going to put a daily Random Coin (Or currency) Fact on my Facebook page. Tonight, I talked about the 1943 copper cents and their value. I am also going to get a Harris coin folder (Lincoln Cents) and a roll of cents for all of my cousins' kids. There are around 12 of them right now. I will also inclu

Co-Workers, First World Problems and Other Things

The last few weeks So, I've determined that the worst time is the time between ordering a coin and when it is delivered. I have a Washington Quarter and two obsolete bills somewhere between the seller and me. I ordered them yesterday, but the wait is awful. I went out to a bookstore called Books A Million to pick up some magazines: Coins, Coin World and Coinage. (I really need to get a subscription) When I was checking out, the cashier told me that she had recently learned that someon

My Goal For 2017

The F.U.N. convention! I have been talking about going to the FUN convention fod a few years, but have never pulled the trigger on it. I have set a do or die goal of attending the FUN convention in 2017. I have created a separate account for svings for it. I would like to bring a decent amount of cash to be able to do some shopping while I am down there. However, my main focus will be attending the auctions, classes, seminars, etc. In addition, I have two cousins who live in FL, so i will

Interesting Finds At The Bank

It was a great week Good evening, everyone. It's been awhile since I have been on here. We just purchased a house and we're ironing out a few kinks that we did not see before settlement. No biggie. So, my co-worker from Azerbaijan is only one coin away from finishing the Philadelphia portion of his State Quarter collection. He is missing Ohio. He is about half way finished with the Denver Mint. He told me today that he is loving looking for these coins. The numsmatics is flowing throu

Merry Christmas/Happy Hanukkah/Joyous Kwanzaa

Coin Collectors are a diverse group of people Hello everyone. I haven't been on here in awhile. My wife and I are in the process of purchasing a house, so any extra money has been going toward the down payment. We go to closing on January 11, as long as everything stays on track. I hope everyone has enjoyed their holiday season and has been surrounded by family and love. I received Ebay gift cards since I can't get anyone to shop for coins for me. ) I'm getting ready to go shopping, bu

Update on my coworker

I've created a monster! As you all know, I have gotten one of my co-workers hooked on collecting. In a way,I have hurt myself. I was in the vault room and he comes back with a "cat that ate the canary" grin on his face and tells me to guess what he just found. It turns out to be a 1928 $2 bill. Needless to say, I was quite jealous. I got him back though. Our currency shipment came in a few hours later, full of bricks from the FED; aka fresh sequential bills.... I ended up going home wit

A few thoughts

An observation, some additions and a rant. An update on my coworker. I caught him picking through the quarters in his drawer during downtime. He is working on the album I got him. I think he's hooked. I told him to let me know when he found a Wisconsin Quarter and I explained the extra leaf varieties to him. I also told him about the Hawaii overprint notes. We got paid early this pay period, so I got to place my coin orders early. I picked up a couple of PF commemorative coins, a few Jeffe

Work

Luring in a coworker I think I have brought a coworker over to the Numismatic Side. (I feel like the Emperor from Star Wars. ) He is from Azerbaijan in eastern Europe and today he was looking at the quarters in his drawer and asked me why they all looked different. Two hours later (No lie) after having talked about the State Quarter program, Augustus St Gaudens, the 1933 Gold Double Eagle, all the mints past and present, (I'm really not kidding. ) he asked if it was expensive to start a

Whittling Down

One Coin At A Time I ordered a couple of commemorative halves and a Washington Quarter for my collection this week. I think there is something psychological about looking at your collection here and seeing gaps in years close up as you add coins. As I read magazines, I look at coins that are on the pie in the sky wish list and I wonder if I were to have the money to buy anything I wanted, when I wanted, would collecting be as much fun? What do you think? As much fun as it would be to w

America The Beautiful Quarters

Hit or Miss? I was at work yesterday breaking down a box of quarters. I always like to look at which coins are at the ends of the rolls, really identifying with the State Quarters, because the Florida quarter is what got me started in coin collecting. As I looked at them, I realized how many of the ATB designs I didn't recognize and couldn't match to the state by the design. For me, that is really MY problem with the series. There is not a cohesive element to it. When it came out, I thou

Brand New Set

For a Brand New Nephew I just found out that my first nephew was born about an hour ago, so I started a new set called Texan's Nephew's Type Set. I just purchased the first coin for it; a coin type that I think most people started out with: a Lincoln Cent. A 2015 PF69 Ultra Cameo to be exact. I will get to meet him tomorrow. Happy collecting, everyone! Marcus To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

I Finally Did It!

My Commemorative Half Dollar set will soon be complete. I received my last paycheck from my job today. (I start at a new place on Monday) This check included all of my unused vacation time, so I figured now was the time to pull the trigger on the last two coins I needed for this set: 1996 MS Olympic Swimming and 1996 PF Olympic Soccer. These two coins have been a real thorn in my side, as I have always found them way over priced. I decided to break down and add PCGS graded coins to my sea
