Come on NGC, this is the best you can do?

You didn't get it right the first time and this time either. I had this "Conder" token graded by NGC several years ago and when it came back they had put the obverse to the back of the slab. Not really a big deal but I did write them a small email about it and never heard back from them. I recently purchased two more "Conders" from ebay and the slabs were so scuffed up you could barely see the token. I packaged up 5 token for reslabing including the backwards token and sent them off. Well, the

Come on NGC, is this the best ... Part 2

Still not happy about that rattle but... A reminder of part 1, coin came back slanted in holder with a little rattle to it. See past journal. After thinking about it for a day I knew NGC wouldn't put the token in crooked and desided it most have turned due to the looseness of the token in the slab, the rattle. I started tapping the bottom right corner of the slab on a table and after about a thousand taps, okay, maybe a hundred, I noticed that it had move a bit, not much, but some. I got me a

The Results - New white Tuxedos

Oh , tell me I didn't do it again? (July of 2010)I just rejoined the Registry for another year so I had the five free submissions to send in and what did I go and do? I went down to the bank box and got out 5 ANACS grade Ireland coins to cross over into NGC slabs. That wasn't the problem. Instead of doing a crossover and making sure that they'd come back a certain grade or at least in the ANACS slabs, I went and cracked the out and sent them in as raw unslabed coins. Doing that always scares t

New coats that don't fit to well. - Breaking Out Part VIII

I think it's time to stop the breaking out. Well, here we go again. I broke out 4 more odd slabs and sent them in with some raw coins. I'll get to why the new coats don't fit but first the results. This coin was purchased raw by me from a Stacks auction a few, make that several, years ago and sent to ANACS for grading. It's a 1806 Ireland proof farthing with frosted design items and mirrored fields. I was thinking PF-65 cameo. ANACS sent it back as PF-63. Bummer. I had it reslabed in thier new

Breaking Out - Part Three

NNC and ICG crossing over to the other side. Well, lets start with the NNC (National Numismatic Certification) slabs, which are sold on eBay by seller- Centles. Never had a problem with Centles as far as service, but I knew that the grading was going to be high compared with NGC or PCGS. I would always purchase from him thinking that the coin was at least 2 grades lower than what the slab said. I sent in 2 NNC slabs and here's what I got back. Sent in was a 1967 Ireland 1/2 crown NNG-66 and it

Accugrade immigrants find a new home at NGC-Part 9

Four tokens cross the boarder to find a better life. It all started on eBay when a seller started selling 18th century British Conder tokens which had been graded by Accugrade. He started with lower graded (EX-AU) tokens which I didn't need but I kept looking what he had and low and behold he started listing some mint state Conders. I told myself I would only bid on MS-63 or higher grades thinking if I crossed them over to NGC they'd be knocked down 2 or 3 grades and then I'd still have mint s

My ANACS slabs made a run for it. Breaking out- Part 5

I've had pretty good luck so far so why not send in some more. I've been keeping track of my cross-overs in my journal and here's the latest. All 5 coins were in ANACS holders which are really nice looking, maybe the best looking of all the services. The first coin is a 1937 Ireland farthing which was graded ANACS-MS-63RB and came back ina NGC holder as a MS-64RB. A nice bump up of one grade which it deserved on eye appeal alone. Next up was a 1931 Ire. penny sent in as a MS-63RB and sent back

"Conder Token" update

I forced myself to do it. It's been a long time since I had the time to update all my sets. Now the my brain issue has been taken care of, and other health issues, I'm back and ready to catch up, not just with the Conders but all my sets. I'd been able to purchase about 10 tokens over the last year that never got added to the set. I've added all them now and corrected , mostly spelling, on all the other ones. I still have much more info to add but at least I have them all in with pictures. Fee

New "CONDERS" on the march to my Registry Set.

Couple of Conder tokens from eBay make it into my set. These may not be the highest grade tokens out there but they sure are nice looking for the grade. Click on Best2u and see the rest of the set under the my Sig. Series sets.

What to do, the whole thing or do I break it down?

Do I stop listing each denom. and do the whole set? I started listing my collection of the Irish series by doing each denom. and now I'm thinking maybe I should just do the whole series in one listing. This would take about 175 slots and some time. What to do. Guess I'll think about it this week and if you see my Ireland listings gone it means I'll soon be doing the whole series as one listing.

Two Conders and one Isle of Man switch teams - Breaking out part 6

Three tokens that have come out of the closet and switched teams. Just a short note about the new insert that NGC uses. I don't like it. It's great to see the rim but it seems to take something away from viewing the coin itself. Conder token number one was a FTGS-MS63 RD and came back as a NGC-MS63 RB. I'm fine with that as it was only about 90% red. Would have been nice to have a 211 year old red token. The second token was a FTGS-MS64BN Suffolk D&H-1. Came back as a NGC-62BN Suffolk D&a

Breaking Out - Part Two

Some results of my crack outs. On 7/19/08 in my journal I told of how I cracked out all my odd slabs (PCI,SEGS,NNC,ANACS,FTGS, and ICG) and sent them into NGC to see how they would do. The first invoice was posted on the web the other day and here are the results. I had 4 PCI slabs that were all graded at least 8 years ago and I agreed with the grades. My Ireland 1939 farthing started out as a PCI-63RB and came back as a NGC-65RB, nice bump up of 2 grades. It does have great eye appeal and

Oh crap, I did it again !!

What the am I doing? I can't seem to stop myself. Well, it seems I can't stop myself when it comes to trying to have all my coins in NGC or PCGS holders. I have nothing against ANACS, IGC (or is it ICG), PCI, or any of the others. I really do buy the coin and not the holder, so it shouldn't matter what holder the coin is in, right. When I buy coins online I do perfer NGC or PCGS but if the seller has great pictures of the whole holder, both sides, I wiil buy any grading services slab. Now, ha

More Conders

Need to send these in to NGC Just picked up a couple more Conders for the Registry set. I'll have to send them in for grading as they are raw. This was a nice little pick up from Tony Fein at VCOINS.

Breaking Out - Part Four

U.S. coins make a break for it, and make it to the other side. Wow, I was thinking the US stuff would take some time at NGC but they are done and here are the results. Lets do the Buffalos first- My 1926 SEGS-65 came back as a NGC-64, I agree. My 1928-D SEGS-64 came back as a NGC-63, Umm, I agree I think. My old PCI 1938-D MS-66 is now in a NGC as MS-67, Oh ya, I agree. My 1915 ANACS-63 is a NGC-63, really was thinking this would get bumped up to a 64. The next coin was purchased from a friend

More ANACS coins jump off the ledge. Breaking Out-Part 7

Sent these coins in 2 weeks after the coins in my last journal (part 6) and they come back 2 days after them. 1.- 1950 Ire.1 penny NNC-MS64 RB came back a NGC-MS62 BN, I'll take that as I was thinking it could come back in a body bag. It looked like there was a film of oil on it. 2. - 1948 Ire. 3 pence ANACS-62 came back as a NGC- AU58, Ouch, that hurt. The 3 pence is the hardest coin to grade due to its small size and fine detail but I think they got this wrong. I was th

Part 10 9/10, Conder tokens and thier new costumes.

Six Conder tokens enjoy thier new NGC costumes These six Conder tokens from the late 1700s in Great Britain had been waiting to get slabed for some time know. They'ed been waiting for some time due to the fact I wasn't sure how they'd grade. Not that there's anything wrong with..., I'll just list them and you'll see why. 1. 1797 Gloucester D&H-3 1 penny, after buying a nice collection of these Gloucester tokens I noticed that this token looked to have a coat of lacq. over both sides. Breaking out

Cracked out all of the odd slabs. I don't know what made me do it but after winning some Conder tokens in a local auction and decideing to have then graded by NGC I said to myself "Why not break out all the coins I have in odd holders and send them along with the Conders?". That's what I did. Slabs from PCI, SEGS, NNC, ANACS (old and new), ICG, and even from the unheard of FTGS (First Token Grading Service) were pryed, hammered, viced, and tin sniped apart. I've had some of these slabs in my c

Part 10 3/4, Costume change

Raw tricks I got from NGC instead of treats. No Happy Halloween here. In my last 2 journals I showed about my latest crossover and in this one it's about the raw coins I sent in with them. I sent in 5 raw Irish coins to be graded. I picked up a nice 1942 half cent at the Michigan State Spring Show. The dealer had 5 of them in his case, the only Irish he had. As this was a coin I was missing I looked them all over and purchased the best one. I always jot down what grade I think a coin will c
