About this journal

Friends,

As of first ---- 15 years ago or so we had a FRIENDS list available on our member home page.  A few years ago the FRIENDS were changed to FOLLOWERS by the NGC group.

Now there is not even a followers list on our home page.  Is this Followers list coming back?? Seems the club is moving more and more towards unsocial practices.

Use to be a member could post their journal from their private member page. Now they have to go to Chat Boards to do so. I don't mind it but I know that many members do not use the chat boards. Will there be a link later to post journals from the member page?

NEW Part Time JOB!!

Some jobs are FUN!! Friends, I recently took the Gold store owner up on a great and fun job offer. The job is running through all the coins that go through the store and finding the best for higher sales and selecting the batches for e-bay bidders. The first week was a major search of 150 rolls of wheat pennies for the 1909S VDB, 2- 1955 poor mans DDO and other dates with double mint marks that I found. Also sales on e-bay of 30 proof sets and 10 silver brown box Ikes. I was happy this w

A NEW FRIEND

And Probably A New Member "with a great future set" Friends, I received a e-mail from someone today wanting a list of my morgans that I am selling. I sent it to him with my phone number. He called and I guess we talked quite a while. My friend has been collecting his morgan dollars for around 5 years and has over 70 different coins (ungraded). I was in the same spot a year ago before my PCGS membership & my Coin Collectors membership. We talked about grading and I was surprised that he w

COIN STORAGE BOXES #4

Wow what did I start here? Hey Buds, As we have been going on about the storage boxes I have always wanted a special Brief Case or something of the sort. Does anyone have a nice aluminum case or fire-proof that will hold 100 or more very special graded coins? If it does work well who sells it and how many graded coins will it hold and what are the measurements would help all of us with interest. I have some beauties that I hold ABOVE the rest and would like to house them accordingly. Late

COIN STORAGE BOXES

The best way to keep em nice. Friends, I have been putting all my graded coins in PCGS boxes for a while. I used the PCGS grading company for 2 years as I built my previous Morgan set. I had around 12 boxes and stored all the coins in them but the NGC coins kept the tops from closing. In February I purchased a set of Silver Eagles from Tpeters in NGC boxes and when I placed a PCGS coin in it, it was a great fit. I also know that Paradise Mint sells the same boxes at around $5 each. These ar

Stock Market Crash Again?

How will our coin values do? Friends, Have you been keeping up with all the hype on the value (downfall) of the US dollar. It seems that we will start to see the adjustments of the end of the corp. bail-outs and the falling of US dollar values in May. Along with all that our dollar is fixing to be replaced. I am very glad that I have not invested in any stock to lose next month. I think we are in for a rough finish for the rest of the year. We have heard and read articles on all this sin

RE: REGISTRY POPULATION

To answer a question from Meatglazier I find 7227 different members. However some of those are deceased and others are on to other hobbies and no longer around. Some members have 2 pages and most dealers have no competition points (they are also considered members in my book). I would guestimate that there is 3500 actual members. Give or take 1000 or more. Should be enough to fill the boat/rocket below you think??? Later---Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. N

TODAYS AUCTION

Of course I went Friends, Well it was a good day. I set out this afternoon to meet a dealer concerning my set. After which I went to the auction. Made a couple friends before the auction hanging around out back talking about coins. When we all went in they registered but I didn't. It wasn't that the 1893s morgan dollar was bad,it had a good rim, rubbed but good visuals, and a couple black spots on reverse. A visit to the coin doctor "NCS" & it would get a 4-12 grade. I only have $2,000 left

A Friend wants to INVEST

I had a wild phone call Friday while working. Friends, As I do different jobs and meet so many people I sometimes bring up my coin hobby. While working Friday I received a phone call from a person that I had done some remodel work for last year. He wanted my opinion on purchasing gold or silver. Now he also added that he had $5000 now but wanted $5000 more in the near future. I told him he could get a little less than 4 ounces of Gold which will gain value gradually. My best opinion to h

I LOST A FEW MORGANS THIS WEEK

BUT I GAINED 15 MERCURY DIMES Friends, I made a choice to trade off 4 morgans for a short set of Merc's this week. In the trade three were the highest points morgans I owned but I really wanted the better grades on those coins later. I received the merc's today and not only were they beautiful they were in a NGC box to boot--thanks JimL4004. I could not wait to see them so I opened the box outside the post office which seemed like forever--being careful cutting all the tape seeing the NGC box

MODERN COMMEMORATIVES

Which would be the best picks? Friends, I am working on a Type set that needs only 1 modern issue comm. coin in it. I would like to put the best looking detail and artistry coin I can purchase. The set will go to my grandchildren and I don't want a dog coin in that slot. The slot is for $1 coin but the 50c MS70 carries more points. I do not know which coins of the modern commemorative set are the top picks for their overall beauty but I figured some of you that have full sets or close could

A little yard work and a COIN BID

I SHOULD HAVE STAYED OUT IN THE YARD (NOT THE DRIVEWAY) Friends, I had a great day outside --Plowing for a late garden and then I decided to scrape my driveway. I got the drive looking good but a spot needed 3 inches taken out. As I scraped and dumped the last bucket there it was ( My telephone line). Oh I have a Teletrade coin screaming at me tonight and I cut all possibilities of purchasing that coin. So I sit in the drive for about an hour piecing back the 4 chunks of wires just in time to

MY "FIRST" NGC TOP POP

Roosie ---2007D--- MS68 Friends, With a little extra time today and needing pics for the dimes in the sales sets on my page I started shooting pics. I am going to enter all the pics without slab view but I took a full slab view for a pic of my first NGC top pop coin graded. This is the only MS68 with none higher. I just recieved my 2011SSSSS (non SSSSS) ASE

I believe these were trucked in from Pennsylvania Needing the coin for the slot that "NGC" says I have to purchase to actually complete to date. It is a joke that I have 2----2011 American Silver Eagles from 2 mints that are IDENTICAL. And the only people to blame for this is the GRADING COMPANIES we rely on for the best of quality. =NGC & PCGS------ I HOPE THIS SERIES DIES SOON. HAPPY COIN COLLECTING Thanks NGC for including this so-called coin in your set.

C-MON KAMAKAZY

I bet you are tearing your forehead hairs out waiting on your grade evaluations. Hey Bud, It is pretty cool to get together in the middle of the mix. I will be on vacation this week but hope the "LIVE" entrance that you have will be overwhelming when you list those new grades. I am looking forward to climbing over 100,000 points and you are the only passenger in the truck-----GET-R-DONE.   Later Dude---- To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. It's been a long 4 days

Snowed in since Sunday Friends, There is nothing worse to me than being stuck at the house. I have checked the journals to read something new once every 3-4 hours, so yes I guess I am very caught up with all of the journals. Tuesday had a little excitement as 15 of the neighbors kids and my 2 ripped through the 32 acres of snowy fields on 4 wheelers with wheel barrow bodies tied to the rears for sleds. I have started a few new sets this year a.k.a. (W K F "fluff" sets)that I think will

My new TURKEYS have arived

This is the 2nd 100%%%% this week Friends I was overjoyed as I loaded the new coins in my Silver Eagle set. Pulling them up one by one out of their NGC boxes to download into the set. All the slabs in pristine condition as if nobody has ever touched them. Todd sure took great care of them. At the end of the 2 NGC boxes of MS Eagles was 1 extra = 1986 PF69UC a gift from Todd that will be very appreciated and added to the other proof I have = 2006w (my new mini set PF-UC. A few more Franklin Halfs

The Juggle act of the year Friends, I had a rough week as there were too many purchases this week to complete. We have 3 birthdays this week in our house ( my wife, son, & I). I managed to get my wife a new set of tires and we are going Monday to get her a new Nicon-D 3000. My son has 2 new tires on the front of his truck, & I got some more Benjis for my half set. After a tight budget was figured and plans set I was told I needed the money to pick up 1/2 a steer I asked for 2 months ag

The KING is for sale

A coin I have wanted since my beginnings as a collector. Friends and Society; Well Sunday is my day of rest and a peaceful day to do all the research I need to make the greatest purchase this Saturday that I could imagine. I have been fishing in new areas for coins and received a e-mail this week for a few rare coins. The seller must have quite the collection to offer such rarities. The first coin on the list is 1909s VDB AU53 which had a generous price. I recently purchased a 1909 VDB

My Gratitude and Thanks!!!

What a QUICK TURNAROUND Friends, I did a journal yesterday on variety dimes and expressed a thought that was in my mind in the 2nd paragraph. I had asked for a few dimes to help complete TPETERS set. Of course I knew a couple might help in a couple days or so. WOW what a great bunch of collectors!!! There were guys searching E-Bay and even PCGS dealers searching in the PCGS club. It's is a scholar showing that all of you performed and my thanks goes out to you all. In less than 24 hours the

Presidents have left

A short stay for a sweet First Day Issue set Friends, Well the presidential dollars sure didn't stick around here very long. I just received the 4 Lincoln coins I purchased from Teletrade and put 2 in the set this morning and by 12:00 they were out the door. Had to download my new Proof Silver Eagles which also came today. It has been a very busy week in coins. Between sales, purchasing, and new purchase options it has been a full time job instead of a hobby.   This month bills are left

A lesson on stars

My latest submission Friends, On my latest submission I sent in a dime I just knew would garner a star but somehow missed the shot. I did a little research on the whole star attribute and learned a little this weekend on submitting toned coins. A coin can be wonderfully toned "BUT" if it has a small dark brown area turning or going black it will not receive the star. I am still pleased with the MS67 grade on a 1949 coin that I got for almost nothing. I thought to pass on the toning tips and

Grabbed 115 rolls of Wheats

This will take a while!!! Friends, I was sitting around and a guy that does quite a few coins tells me he has 115 rolls of wheats in the trunk of his car. I'm thinking yeah not worth too much and then he says 1.75 a roll. !! that would keep me busy and off of e-bay so I got em. I will be looking for varieties for a while. Different holder shot

The 1949-D MS64 Here is a shot I took after removing from the old mint set that shows a better view of the edges. Maybe a trip to NCS to get the duller toning off would improve the grade. I did see a small nick on thee obverse but never really studied these dimes close as they simply went in for their beauty not the grade so I am happy overall!! new additions to a old set

Finally! a set started last year will get new faces. Friends, Sometimes we start sets intending to build them but get pulled to something else that is easier, less expensive, or faster. So the set just sits there month after month letting you know you have changed your sites. Well my proof silver eagles I purchased last year was a start that actually went nowhere as there were not many good offers for sale but other sets that surely fit the budget. I purchased a nice MS ASE set this year
