The Dwight D. Eisenhower Appreciation Medals

Medals with Presidential provenance... I finished writing my first numismatic book (the name of the book is the same as the title of this journal entry). The book is based on documents from the White House, US Treasury Department, and US Mint in Philadelphia. These documents were part of a working file belonging to a top military aide on President Eisenhower's White House Staff. The file was kept by the military aide. After his death, all his papers was passed to his son. After the son passed,

Looking for a Thick Low Volcano !

Hopefully this should ERUPT with a search ... I've been reviewing my previous blog entries at my own website (not here to promote it) and would like to engage the members here to search or locate a possible non-existent So Called 50 Cent (SC50C) variety.       Back in March 2013, I documented the existence of a low volcano and high volcano variety for the 1959 Silver SC50C Hawaii Statehood Heraldic Art Medal at my website.       I'm in search of a specimen to disprove a theory. I'm l

My Latest Acquisition

A Matching Pair of Top Pops! Only 11 Alaska-Hawaii uniface pairs were struck...       This is the only pair encapsulated and graded by NGC.       Both were originally part of the Harold E. Hibler collection (author of the reference book: So-Called Dollars by Harold E. Hibler and Charles V. Kappen). Sold as part of the Ostheimer Collection back in January 2011.       The Alaska uniface is the plate coin in the Hibler-Kappen 2nd edition book.       Both are great additions t

Possible Candidates for Inclusion in the HK So Called Dollar Reference Book

I would be really impressed if it's included in the book's update! I've initiated discussion (at a So Called Dollar (SCD) discussion website) about the inclusion of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Appreciation Medals in the update to the Hibler-Kappen book.       No previous references or documentation has been available on this entire medal series. I performed research on the Eisenhower appreciation medals and documented my research findings in a book that was released back in February 2014.

Sale Akin to Hoard Dispersal

The Royal Hawaiian Mint (RHM) is commemorating its 40th anniversary by emptying its vaults. I first reported their sale of past issues (i.e. hoard dispersal) on September 12, 2014 at my website. These are originally struck issues and not re-strikes. On September 16, 2014, Coin World reported the 40th anniversary of the RHM and the availability of related commemorative issues. Coin World's write-up did not mention the sale of past issues.       Many of the RHM issues are available for N

Hawaii X# MB60 Gold Princess Kaiulani Akahi Crown

A beautiful coin in my collection. This is its NGC World Coin Price Guide listing:       http://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/hawaii-ounce-akahi-1-crown-x-mb60-1991-cuid-136315-duid-339316       Hawaii X# MB60 was issued in 1991 with a documented mintage of 55 specimens. The Princess Kaiulani Akahi Crown is 1 ounce of 0.999 fine gold and an uncirculated striking (identifiable by the number 1 (for 1 ounce) on the reverse).       This is one of the most iconic designs created

Image Request by Smithsonian

Help requested... Aloha, I have a very busy blog website (TheHawaiianaNumismatist.com) and get many requests relating to Hawaii coins, medals, and tokens. I am tracking down a NGC point of contact for high resolution images for the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indians. (They have periodically held Hawaiian events and displayed Hawaiian culture items). They are seeking specific images of Kingdom of Hawaii coins. Contact me ASAP with NGC point of contact so that I can forwar

HTML Modification of my NGC Registry Set

Existing format was boring ... I looked at my custom set and saw an issue. The set listing looked like a webpage full of words without any formatting. I modified the set by: adding a video, adding paragraph headers, adding ordered list, adding url links, and modified the text (bold and italics). More work remains... Shot-Down Spy Plane Results in the Forced Destruction of Gold & Silver U.S. Mint Medals

Want to learn more? Yesterday, the American Numismatic Association confirmed that my submitted Money Talk topic was accepted for presentation at the upcoming ANA 2015 World's Fair of Money in Chicago! I'll be showing images of the gold & silver U.S. Mint medals that were forced to be destroyed (part of the U.S. Mint's "non-disclosure" series of medals). The main focus of my presentation is to present information about the U.S. Mint's "non-disclosure" series of medals. This U.S. Min

Day 4 of 17 day vacation on East Coast, USA Mele Kalikimaka me ka Hau'oli Makahiki Hou = Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Unfortunately, I was not invited on Air Force One with the President and his family for the holidays in Hawai'i (also my home state). Speaking of Presidents, I did update the Dwight D. Eisenhower Class 2 Presidential Award Medals

Numismatic research sharing time.... My book launch was a few days ago. Image is of the eight Eisenhower Class 2 award medals (I established 5 Classes in my book). By far the Class 2 medals are my favorite as they are the same size, composition, and weight as a U.S. Morgan silver dollar. These medals were struck by the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. NGC previously graded and encapsulated my DDE-C2-07 (1960 Eisenhower State of Hawai'i Visit Award Medal). Let me remind you that these are not co

What does COINWeek, The E-Sylum..., and the ANA have in common this week?

Newly documented Presidential Award medals ... Seems interest has been sparked with the release of my latest book: Authoritative Numismatic Reference: Presidential Medal of Appreciation Award Medals 1958-1963, ISBN 1511786744. Even the American Numismatic Association Facebook page has posted a link to the COINWeek write-up.... To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Hawaii the 49th State !

Not a typo... Today (August 21, 2015) is the anniversary of Hawaii Admission Day or Statehood Day. Hawaii is actually the 50th State. However, So-called dollar HK-722a claims Hawaii is the 49th State (sorry Alaska). See image. Most HK-722a are holded to obliterate this "49" design error (overzealous designer, manufacturer, and issuer). The image is an intact specimen I purchased last month. It's my submittal candidate for HK-722a top pop. NGC population is a mere 3 specimens with a top

Accurate mintage provided to Honeycutt H-525 & Basso B-898... See image. DDE-12 (medal in image) information taken from my book: The Dwight D. Eisenhower Appreciation Medals, ISBN 1495348229. The Philippines numismatic reference books cataloged the Eisenhower visit medal, but does not provide additional information. DDE-12 was struck by the US Mint in Philadelphia. Obverse and reverse designs by Frank Gasparro. Medal was used during President Eisenhower's trip to Taiwan, Philippines,

Unlisted So Called Dollar Variety: HK-723 "Star without Rays" ...Souvenir of Honolulu

Undocumented variety in So-Called Dollars by Hibler and Kappen. It has been a while since I posted a journal entry. I finally purchased a HK-723 "star without rays" variety. This variety is unlisted in So-Called Dollars by Hibler and Kappen. However, its listed in Hawaiian Money Standard Catalog. 2M-393 is the "star without rays" variety and 2M-394 is the "star with rays". The "with rays" and "without rays" are not minor varieties. There is one more difference. The "star with rays" we

Update: The Kennedy Appreciation Medal

Medal with a Presidential provenance... Updated 06/28/2014 The Kennedy Appreciation Medal was struck in 1962. Only 300 were minted at the US Mint in Philadelphia. The medal was first used in 1963 during Kennedy's trip to Ireland. I am still performing research on the Kennedy appreciation medal. If you have any original source information (US Mint or White House) or good leads, I would greatly appreciate it. To the best of my knowledge, only one catalog reference (K-62-1) is made (The Me

The Hawaiiana Numismatist

Book writing is fun... I've been busy (up coming engineering presentations and numismatic book writing project) to write any journal entries at this website. I took on a side project to write a book called The Hawaiiana Numismatist. For those who don't know, the current Hawaiian numismatic reference book (I don't want to mention the name), have been perpetuating a string of errors and inaccuracies. What motivated me in this action is that NGC replied to an inquiry I made about a medal str

Re: Question on Grading a Hawaiian Medal

Still waiting for a reply... To make a long story short: 1. On 09/06/15 I asked about the grading and encapsulation of a silver Hawaiian medal. Two gold version were encapsulated by NGC and can be seen at the Ira & Larry Goldberg Sept. 7, 2009 auction.   2. I provided supporting documentation from an ANA Periodical (June 1960) that the silver version and gold version were designed and manufactured by Precious Medals Hawaii (original designer amd manufacturer). 3. This is the orginal

Printed numismatic documentation of this medal and medal series is sparse. I would appreciate any information/images that can be shared with me in completing my research. The significance of this medal are: 1. It was ordered by the White H
