National Numismatic Collection

I once took a date to see the the National Numismatic Collection ... http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/index.cfm One of the best things about living in the Washington DC metropolitan area is the richness in historical artifacts. I intentionally look for new experiences in the area. As such, I also like to share my interests. On one occasion I took a date to visit the National Numismatic Collection to share my interest in coins. She was enthralled with my hobby after viewing some of

My Pending Set Donation

1 of 6 possible "First Day Ceremony" sets to be permanent part of National Park museum ... If you read my previous journal entry titled "I Was There!"... The coin set mentioned has been NGC submitted for a "First Day Ceremony" designation. After correspondences and telephone calls to NGC, it was agreed that these coins will be designated as "First Day Ceremony"(they could have easily obtained a "First Release" or "Early Release" designation). I believe this is the first and only Star-Spangle

My Latest Acquisition

A Matching Pair of Top Pops! Only 11 Alaska-Hawaii uniface pairs were struck...       This is the only pair encapsulated and graded by NGC.       Both were originally part of the Harold E. Hibler collection (author of the reference book: So-Called Dollars by Harold E. Hibler and Charles V. Kappen). Sold as part of the Ostheimer Collection back in January 2011.       The Alaska uniface is the plate coin in the Hibler-Kappen 2nd edition book.       Both are great additions t

My Best Circulation Find from the Past

The year was 1995. The location was Southern Maryland. The find was ... In May of 1995, I stumbled upon a news article about a woman who unloaded a few coins at a coin shop in Annapolis, Maryland for a whopping $200 a piece. With this news, I rushed to the local bank to purchase a new box of coins. I opened my first roll and started to delicately view each. As I detected something odd with the coin I would place it aside. I looked at each coin with a 10X loupe. It was tedious and my eyes t

MS 68 version of Hawaii Five-0

A recent 50c acquisition to my collection ... The image is a coin I recently purchased. It's a so-called 50c, 1959 silver Hawaii Statehood, thin variety (illegally made the same thickness as a US 50c piece). Purchased at a reasonable price... Mele Kalikimaka me ka Hau'oli Makahiki Hou (in the Hawaiian language)

Day 4 of 17 day vacation on East Coast, USA Mele Kalikimaka me ka Hau'oli Makahiki Hou = Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Unfortunately, I was not invited on Air Force One with the President and his family for the holidays in Hawai'i (also my home state). Speaking of Presidents, I did update the Dwight D. Eisenhower Wikipedia page (Legacy and memory section). 1) Added text about the history of the Eisenhower POTUS appreciation medals. 2) Added example images of an Eisenhower

Means to an End...

I've been collecting and selling coins from my collection as a means to an end .... Rare coin collecting has been a very enjoyable and profitable hobby for me. I have been collecting and reselling rare coins as a means of supplementary support while pursuing each of my academic degrees. I have four conferred academic degrees, so this means to an end has really helped me out. My degrees include (from lowest to highest): AAS in Electronic Technology, BS in Computer Science, MS in Systems Enginee

Meaning of the Numismatic Detective Title

I don't want to regurgitate so I must create! I use the heading "Numismatic Detective" with the condition that what I document is new information that I created, derived or is missing in numismatic reference books or periodicals. I try not to "regurgitate" all my information that was previously documented by other numismatic sources. Why? I was once given an example by a professor. Three college students were given a blank piece of paper and told to take notes during the guest lecture. The f

Looking for a Thick Low Volcano !

Hopefully this should ERUPT with a search ... I've been reviewing my previous blog entries at my own website (not here to promote it) and would like to engage the members here to search or locate a possible non-existent So Called 50 Cent (SC50C) variety.       Back in March 2013, I documented the existence of a low volcano and high volcano variety for the 1959 Silver SC50C Hawaii Statehood Heraldic Art Medal at my website.       I'm in search of a specimen to disprove a theory. Knowledge is Power (Part II)

Read, study, and learn your collecting interest... No matter where or from whom you purchase your numismatic material always be an astute hobbyist by being knowledgeable expert in your interest area or seek proper expert advice. I seen too many individuals make purchases that they have regretted from seconds (at auctions) to decades (at appraisals) later. The challenge for each collector, no matter what is collected, is to be more knowledgeable than the seller/dealer. At some point as

Knowledge is Power

I was fortunate to have help in entering the coin collecting hobby... I did collect coins as a child, but it was more of a curiosity than a hobby. While serving in the US Air Force, I was given an opportunity to learn from a few coin dealers in Montana. Montana is a silver state and silver dollars were very plentiful. A Montana coin dealer told me to read up on the subject before buying any coins. After reading the Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of U. S. Morgan and Peace Silver Do

Knowledge Empowers the Collector (previous journal entry removal)

I had to remove my original journal entry ... For those of you who read my original entry (posted this past weekend) got a glimpse of a recent purchase I made. It was about a naive auction lot seller and informed auction lot buyer. I removed the journal entry as the auction purchasing process is still running its course. I will re-post the original journal entry, provide an updated journal entry and point out additional interesting material I found relating to the purchased item. This pur

Knowledge Empowers the Collector -- Part 3

1959 Official Alaska Statehood Medal Progression Set I have not found any instance where a similar progression set was listed at a major auction house. There is one instance where "completed" medals (in different finishes and coloration) were auction listed. http://preview.outside-affiliatelinksnotallowed.com/bf8b9ol There is one instance where a single "trail strike" was auction listed. http://preview.outside-affiliatelinksnotallowed.com/a9ell2m This set is definitely housed in an a

Knowledge Empowers the Collector -- Part 2

1959 Official Hawaii Statehood Medal Progression Set and a Part 3 teaser... I have only found two instances where a similar progression set was listed at a major auction house (Ira & Larry Goldberg Auctioneers May 2006 and Stack's September 2006). MedalBlog (A Worldpress blog) by D. Wayne Johnson (corporate historian and senior consultant for the Medallic Art Company and was director of research with Medallic Art Company from January 1966 until December 1976) answered a question by a rea

Knowledge Empowers the Collector -- Part 1

What a find! I review auction listings periodically and scan for items of interest to add to my collection. Two weeks ago, I found a very interesting listing. The seller did not know exactly what they were selling (as stated in the listing) and was not able to locate any information about his item. My "cherry picker" curiosity kicked in. I reviewed the wording in the auction listing and its pictures multiple times. The information provided was sparse and the low quality pictures were not tha

Kingdom of Hawaii - King Kalakaua Coronation Medal

Kennedy Half Dollar Collectors Will Freakout

This is not a Hawaiian related entry.... In all accounts, the true precursor design of the reverse side of the Kennedy half dollar is from the Class 5 Kennedy President of the United States (POTUS) special Government medal (sGm). You have to remember that this Class 5 medal was struck while President Kennedy was still alive. The precursor proof is the placement of the designer's initial "FG" (Frank Gasparro) in a familiar position (see video at time 1:38). This was one of the most

Interstate H-3 Coin

What? An interstate highway in Hawaii... A relative gifted this race coin to me a few years back. She volunteered at the 1997 Great Trans Koolau Trek and was awarded this coin. I recently did some research on it and its mintage is 460 (information from http://www.royalhawaiianmint.com/database.htm) H-3 is one of the most expensive interstate highways built. It cost $80 million dollars per mile 0(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_H-3) I made this video last year while traveling on par

Inadvertent NGC Body Bags

My Pearl Harbor Casualties circa 12/12/12 While on my Hawaiian vacation, I was dismayed in learning that three of my 1941 Remember Pearl Harbor medals from my NCS/NGC submittal were flagged as "Ineligible Type" (class of coin, medal or token that NGC does not certify). Wait ... what do you mean they are "Ineligible Type"? After I arrived back to the east coast, I sent an email to NGC to explain to me which specific items in the Medcalf & Russell reference book (Hawaiian Money Standard

Image Request by Smithsonian

Help requested... Aloha, I have a very busy blog website (TheHawaiianaNumismatist.com) and get many requests relating to Hawaii coins, medals, and tokens. I am tracking down a NGC point of contact for high resolution images for the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indians. (They have periodically held Hawaiian events and displayed Hawaiian culture items). They are seeking specific images of Kingdom of Hawaii coins. Contact me ASAP with NGC point of contact so that I can forwar

I'm Surprised!

I'm eager to see the conservation results by NCS ... I submitted a 1959 Official Hawai'i Statehood sterling silver medal (serial number 26) for NCS conservation and NGC grading. I was expecting a details encapsulation as some sort of chemical layering and reaction was occurring on the medal's reverse. This is the lowest serial number for the medal I have encountered and picked up this prize just for the serial number. I checked the medal's status. It graded MS-66! Now it's a bigger prize

I wonder who his silver supplier is ...

... I just provided my 155th Kiva loan to a sterling silver handcrafter in Indonesia. http://www.kiva.org/lend/451133 If I had his mailing address, I would have donated a bunch of junk silver coins I have.... I Was There!

I see a need for a Ceremony Release designation for coins/medals obtained at an US Mint coin/medal release day ceremony. Why? Because I was there! I was not there 30-days after the fact (designation criteria for Early or First Release labels). I was in attendance to support the celebration of the Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coin Release Day ceremony at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Baltimore Maryland at 11:00 am on the morning of March 5, 2012. The ceremony wa

I Miss College ... Sort Of...

Got my grades today ... NGC grades I never did have a low grade in college...but... My NGC submittal (received by NGC on 11/08/2012) results were revealed to me this afternoon. This entry is about my HK-721 so called dollar (aka Honolulu Carnival Dollar, Honolulu (Aloha) Carnival Dollar, Mid-Pacific Aloha Carnival Dollar, Dukie, etc...) submittal. No slab image at this time. HK-721 so called dollar has a Fuld Rarity of R-5 (76 - 200 known). NGC census is currently at 6 graded (not i
