First Flea Market --- In the books --- What I learned (pic added)

I learned some things I didnt know and gained a lot of knowledge on the Flea Market scene. Well my first official setup to sell coins (and other items) is in ther books. I setup ar around 6am and endured the pouring rain for the entire day. Of course, anyone who has ever attended this flea market knows that it always finds a way to rain for the event every year... So I was fully prepared. I was setup under a 12x12 canopy with my collection of coins, sports cards and nascar die cast collect

Flea Market now... a couple days away - A lot of work to do

Leading up to this event I have purchased two display cases and a large sign to hang from my tent/canopy....US COINS...etc Tonight I price everything out. I have to give some serious thought on how to price the coins I am going to offer. Coin prices are a funny thing. In an environment like Ebay, ther market is so saturated that realized prices tend to be below the industry as a whole. Then you have a couple different price guides which are supposed to help you determine a coins worth.

Tryin something new --> Selling at a Flea Market

I have sold a coin or two on Ebay but I would not consider myself a "coin dealer" by any means... but I figured I would try setting up a table at the St Nicholas Flea Market in Latham, NY on Saturday May 19th (right next to Guptill's). The flea market usually has at least a hundred tables selling everything from World War II memorabilia to general garage sale type items. In the years that I have attended this event, I have only come across someone carrying coins one time. SO this is a bit

Standing Liberty Quarter The Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar was designed by Hermon A. MacNeil. The initial design included a bare-breasted Liberty, which proved to be much too daring for some influential individuals. The complaints against the design were sufficient to force a change in 1917, but the re-design was extreme to the opposite degree. Instead of covering Liberty's breast with the same flowing material of the rest of her dress, the designer clothed her in a coat of mail! The rev

70 = PERFECT Dont knock scrutiny

To me, a 70 should not be a common grade. I truly do not believe that PCGS is biased against grading coins 70. If anything, they just look harder for imperfections than others might. Where another company might let a miniscule imperfection go, PCGS is more likely not to. I will always side with the company grades hard than one who is too lose with their high grades.

20th Anniversary SAEs and one happy camper.

Sometimes you just expect the norm to occur. It is nice when something surprises you. I submitted my 20th anniversary SAE set to PCGS a couple weeks ago with no real expectations for the grades. I assumed they wouls probably grade 69s as they are taken care of alot better than normal releases. Even at 69, these coins are really nice and doing well at auction. I received an email yesterday from PCGS advising me that my grades had been finalized. I was very pleasantly surprised to see tha

A Concept the US MINT should consider

With all of the hype of First Day issue coins.. the US Mint could really capitalize! The US Mint is out to make money. This is apparent by their push of Presidential Dollars and the fact that they sell $25 worth of these coins for $36. So here is my idea... Special First Day of Issue US Mint wrappers for rolled coins. Imagine is you could buy a US Mint Wrapped roll of presidential dollars that were marked (by the US Mint) as First Day of issue. Then it would be far easier for the gener

RE: Re: NGC vs PCGS - The Facts of the Stats.

These statistics can be helpful..if you use them the right way True, you can not simply take the total results by grade and make any reasonable determination by comparing these numbers, but you can however, compare percentages. Granted you need to have decent sample so your results arte completely skewed but these numbers would then have meaning. For example.... If company A grades 5000 quarters (keeping it simple here) and grades: 50 of those quarters as MS70 1000 of those quarte

RE: NGC, PCGS, and ICG

How can they have an accuracy rating? Grading is largely subjective In order for these numbers to be valid, you would have to conclude that the Grey Sheet has graders who are far more experienced at grading than the grading companies. How else would they be qualified to determine how accurate the grades are. I cant see how you could put stock in those numbers. http://NumisGuard.com - Protecting Collectors One Coin at a Time

RE: Presidential 'FIRST DAY OF ISSUE'

They sure dont make it easy. To take advantage you need to find a financial institution that will actually receive the coins on day 1.. then get your butt in gear to purchase the coins... package the coins and ship the coins to NGC (using overnight service) to get them there in time for this designation. Seems like an awful lot of trouble. http://NumisGuard.com - Protecting Collectors One Coin at a Time

Um... I think we are talking about two different things.

How would a private citizen even begin to attempt to regulate the exchange of currency? Perhaps policing is a poor term... but the goal is not regulation.. its education. There is nothing illegal about educating the public on how to protect themselves from fraudulent salespeople. The type of goods sold is really irrelevant. It could be any widget. Think of this more as a Consumer Report online.. a hidden camera at repair shop where they are charging customers for things that arent really wr

The coin police..... we are coming!

I have begun creating an organization with the sole purpose of educating collectors and minimizing the impact of unethical dealers/ebay sellers whose only goal is to make as much money as possible with no regards to fairness and accurate representation of their goods. I know I am not permitted to

NGC PF70 Silver State Quarters

I just cant help myself Well...since my explosion back into coin collecting I have aquired quite a few more of my State Quarters... I purchased the complete 2000, 2003 sets and the 3 remaining 2002 quarters I needed. I did manage to pick up one of the 2002 quarters for under $40 so that was pretty cool. so now I am standing in front of the Empire State Building with a couple suction cups in my hands trying to figure out how Im gonna get to the top. I now have the complete silver sets from

Going in the wrong direction

My goal was to walk away from collecting... but it sucked me back in. Just when you think you've recovered, ya relapse. Coin collecting just might be an addiction. I wonder if I can go on disability to stay home and buy coins. In any case I had planned to sell off my collection of NGC PF70 Silver State Quarters. It's not a complete set of course (even when speaking of the coins which have already been released). Instead of selling them, I just purchased the 2000 year set. This brings m

Re: RE: TIME TO MOVE ON

I could never sell everything... I do plan on keeping some coins. I have a Dansco 7070 which I begun a short time ago... and it and the coins I have collected thus far for it, will remain tucked away. I also bought another Dansco album and filled it with blank pages (one for each denomination) and it is almost completey filled. That will remain as well. There are also some select graded coins I will not part with. The reality is that there is a lot of money tied up in my collection....mo

Time to move on.... for now

Im selling off most of my collection... The time has come for me to move on. I have enjoyed coin collecting, and I am sure I wondt wonder too far, but I am going to sell off most of what I have and move the rest to the back of the safe where I can forget them and coin collecting for a while. Coin collection can really be addicting and I find myself constantly with the urge to buy more and more. My primary collection is my NGC PF70 Silver State Quarters so I will try to refrain from lettin

RE: Re: This is the NGC Registry. Right?

This post had nothing to do with exclusivity... I think you flew by the actual topic of the post. This wasn't about NGC being exclusive. It was a nod towards a little extra credit for having a complete NGC collection on the NGC registry. Your argument is misdirected. Good Day ;-)

RE: Do you want it fast or do you want it right??

If only you could guarantee this tradeoff... If only you could guarantee this tradeoff... I might buy it. However, the reality is that it could take a million days and still be inaccurate. These coins arent taking forever because NGC is taking extra time to look them over. They are taking extra time because they are sitting there waiting to be graded behind higher priority items... and once they do get to these coins (which are piling up) they will be so behind, I would doubt any additiona

Turnaround times

So here's a question.... Is the current turnaround time what to expect if you send a coin in today? Or for all coins they have now? With the turnaround time for economy going up and up, are my coins ever going to be returned? I still have an order from 06/21 marked received... I was expecting early august based on their 30 day turnaround time...but within the last day or two they tacked on another 8 days. 38 days is excessive to say the least.

RE: hard to sell a ICG coin

Dont confuse popularity with the ability to grade... Just because its hard to sell ICG doesnt mean that they are poor graders. Gaining the trust of collectors takes time. Dont get me wrong, Im not defending ICG...they have not proven anything to me yet. My point is: dont write off coins in ICG holders just because they are in ICG holders. You could miss out on some nice coins. Perhaps they wont all cross-over but the whole idea of crossing-over is a conflict of interest if you ask me.

RE: Third Party Grading and who's Good and Who's Bad ?

Top 4 in no particular order PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG... Now the question is, how do these 4 rank within the top 4? As much as I do business with NGC, I would have to say PCGS is still best known for being the hardest grader. Everyone will have their say and swear up and down about who is good and who is not...the thing to understand is that most people will base their "rankings" on personal good/bad experiences which may or may not properly represent each company. From my personal experienc

ok, so its easy to be impulsive in the wonderful world of coins. I know all about it. I also suffer from IGHI... For those of you unfamiliar with IGHI, or "I Gotta Have It", researchers have found a strong correlation between Ebay and this affliction. This order can be quite prevelant in the coin collecting world so buyer beware. Ok, so IGHI doesnt officially exist..(yet) but I am beginning to feel as though I am addicted to buying coins.
