1954 Proof Double Die Dime?

Somebody smack me and say that I'm wrong! Alright, I have the cherrypickers book, and I have heard of the "thickness" in a double die, but have never seen one until now, and it's not listed. Now i've had these dimes for some odd 25+ years, and really haven't looked at them since I bought them. There once was an article in COINS magazine that said that the Roosevelt dime was going to go out of circulation (much like the talk of the penny going out) so that's why I bought these. Now afte

IGC vs NGC

Past experiences? Alright, I really can't invest the amount of money that I would like to in my coins. A two hundred dollar purchase is pushing it, at least with the wife, and that would be enough for at least 6 months. Needless to say, I am always looking for the bargains. I'm always looking at auction sites and seeing if there is something I can afford. My primary "obsession" is the 1971 proof set. There was a 1971 PF69UCAM cent on HA and I had put 500 as a bid. I would ask for forgivn

I got #1 ???

New #1 in the 1971 proof sets? I don't signed on to the site for over a month, and somehow I got the #1 slot in the 1971 proof sets. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving it! Well, I'm loving it for the time being. I wondered if Kallenberg had sold something, ....nope. I didn't add nothing to take over (if I did, it would of cost me a marriage). Then I stated looking at the dates of another 1971 set that I hold dear, which is the 1971 PF 69 cameo. I noticed on one of the dates, it lists the dim

It's horrible having OCD, especially with coins

I just need one more to tie... I have been VERY slowly concentrating on one proof set in the registry...the 1971. I have made a few purchases throughout the years, some of which got me a very verbal tongue lashing (but it was worth it!). More than 5 years ago, I did see the coin that my collection has been lacking, the 1971 PF 69 Ultra Cam Lincoln cent, and it was with Heritage auction, and bidding was @ $600. I knew from experience from my other purchases, that this one may make me a bachelor

Egypt error coin

I really don't know why I buy some things.... I really try and convience myself to center in on one and only one...well, maybe two, and ONLY two types of coins ... well ... three is the the max...ah hell, whatever looks interesting! I am soon to be the proud owner of this coin from Ebay auction #290171943408 The coin is from egypt and dated 1970 commerating the 10,000 anniversity of the Cairo mosque university and the mohammedan calendar says 1359-1361 instead of 1389-91. Now, d

....And a hush falls on NGC

They still may be right, but they were wrong once before.... And yes, I'm still concerned about my 1954 proof possible "doubled" dime. I've written customer service with a "how can this be" type letter, and haven't heard anything back from them in 3 days, and now over the Economy EXTENDED timeline. Remember back in the beginning of the year (I'm lucky to remember where I live) when you renewed your subscription to NGC and you got the American Eagle silver coin? When I got mine, it was grad

I'm just 1 cent away!

...and a breath from being divorced! I shouldn't be allowed on Ebay when I've been drinking. Why can't I be like other American males that get into fights or become beligerant or something like that? But NOOoooo! I got the little devil on my shoulder that tells me to check Ebay and see....just for the heck of it...if there are any graded 1971 proofs I just may be missing out of my registry. Why LOOK! There just happens to be a 1971 Pf 69 UCAM nickel that you're missing! And there's ju

New #1 1971 proof set

Just got the certificate in the mail A few weeks ago, I got my certificate in the mail for having the #1 slot for the 1971 proof set. Granted, it cost me alot of begging, bargaining and gettin yelled at, but it was worth it (ahem). What was more of a challenge for me is that I was going up against "the" #1 1971 Eisenhower Doller graded PCGS PF 70 Deep Cam! I had already resolved myself to the fact that #2 is good, but then NGC FINALLY upgraded the Roosevelt dime points (pf 69 deep cam) whic

Presidential errors

An error within itself...kinda Well, it's minimal, but in the NGC report of the Presidentail errors of the MONROE Dollar, they show a Washington Dollar (told you it was minimal!) But apart from that, Granted, that's cool and all, but there are some real other errors I asked NGC about, that they denied me on. One is the eye on Madison. Some are full circle, some arn't (that also goes along with the curl on the shoulder, missing one). The other is a die crack on the reverse that extend

RE: Look what I found Pt 1

Mr. Cooper..... If I can find a find like that, Can I borrow 3 of your 9 kids? I got 3 of my own, so I figure, I may come up with at least a 1909 VDB...Hopefully in better condition. I'll even let you choose the kids! :-)

It's time...

The #1 1971 proof set is also the first to go Greeting all! Well, I'm finally retired from the Air Force and moved to Columbia SC. It's been 4.5 months since, and still looking for a job. The retirement and disability is only half of what I was bring in. The resumes are in and still being put out on a daily basis. I have a wonderful wife at my side, who is doing the majority of the work, since she used to do resume screening, and knows what to look for when looking AT a resume. My 3 kids

The local coin dealer's "treasure chest"

Not to mention the 50% off on all the coins inside led to an unknown "so called dollar" buy I'm stationed in Tampa, but for the past 5 weeks I've been in Panama City for school. Just for the heck of it on a Saturday, a friend and I went to a local coin and jewelry dealer just to check it out. Of course, lots of overpriced stuff for their 50% off sale so it was prety much window shopping. Long story shortened, I saw his "treasure chest" of coins, went through them and picked out a 1777 48 Ei

Registry question ANSWER

Thanks to all who answered me Yes, I did get a lot of responses from my fellow collectors, but also from AMY for NGC who also wrote me with: "Yes, you may use the same coin (same cert #) in different sets. As in your example, you may register your 1971 1C proof in your 1971 Proof set and in a Lincoln Cent Proof set. What you may not do is register the same coin (same cert #) to sets of the same type. In your case, you have registered two (2) 1971 Proof sets. You may not register the same c

Journals---the crack of coins!

There is no better trip (or legal high) than reading about someone elses finding experiences. The first step, like all addictions, is ADMITTING IT! No! Not me! I don't read these real life experiences that get my heart racing! It's really amazing, I think, to read these posts, and I find myself in their shoes, and wonder how exciting and thrilling it must of been to have a coin upgraded...or graded to a "1 of 1" status...or a find of a life time. I find I can't get past the front page

Why such a price span?

1971 proof 69 DCAM cent Alright, I know I shouldn't of did this, but I'm thinking of making one last purchase (and REALLY t'ing off the wife) but I just now noticed the 1971 PF 69 DCAM (or ultra). I may have noticed it before, but with my memory, who knows. Now it's fresh. The company PCGS list it's worth for $12,500, and NGC list it for $1,380. Now I do know that I used to always say that that cent was worth $11K, but I was shocked to see it now at $12,5K, which is a bigger increase th

What will the mint do?

When they get to Abe Lincoln AND Jefferson Davis? I was talking with some guys from the good state of SC, and of course, it usually ends up with a conversation about the civil war. WEll, they know about the new gold dollars with all the presidents on them, and kiddingly, one asked, "will they put Jeff Davis on them new dollar coins"? I kinda thought he may of had a point. I mean, Jeff Davis WAS the president of the confederate states of America, right? Or will they not because the confe

And while I'm at it!!!!

Why doesn't "numismedia" list any type of prices? Who is this "Numismedia" and WHY is NGC going with them if they can't even price a 2007 Washington Dollar like PCGS can?!?!?! I like NGC over PCGS, but PLEASE! Get someone to price your collection accordingly!!!!!! Everything I type in has ** for a price. That is UNSAT. And that description says that they do not price that type of coin, or is the price of the parent coin. SO, let's examine that for a sec. A 2000 CLOSE "AM" cent is the sa

Every once in a while something goes right

.....kinda..... Well, as you probably know, I'v been concerned about my beloved 1971 set, and being tossed down to number 5. Thanks to HA, I was able to attain a half 69 DCAM for what "I" would consider a good price. My darling wife would disagree, seeing that it's only 50 cents, and if I paid $1.00 for it, I got ripped off. Let's not tell her just yet the price I won it for. AND WITH THAT SIAD, here's the teaser part where I said "kinda". Yes, I got my coin for a price I was willing t

Understanding turn around time

Follow up from yesterdays E-mail Fellow collectors, I do understand NGC getting swamped with submissions. I do understand that it's now going to take longer. I can also understand the price increase because of the aforementioned. Yes, NGC is a great coin grader. If you want the service, your gonna pay for it. If you want to service, your gonna wait for it. I really don't have a problem waiting an extra week, but it still sticks in my head that I could of had my submissions a week ago, li

I WON!!!!!!

Just goes to show what happens when you throw a date out there... Thank you Mr. Cooper for the cointest...I mean contest...either way. Wish I could do the same for other collectors. As of now, all my high grades go into hiding for my twin boys till they grow up, or daddy goes into eternal sleep! Which ever comes first! (I'm hoping they will grow up first, so I can at least tell them about the coins that I have for them). This will be one of those coins. My boys will be pretty set... but I

Pics of MY oldest coins

They are 81 and 82 years younger than Mr. Coopers! Like I said in one of my earlier entries, I bought these at a flea market probably around 1979-81 (I was 16 or 18). The guy wanted $10.00 a peice for them, and I did the usual "well, I don't know, I just want them as a joke to tell my Ma look what I found in the back yard" type deal, but I knew that with that kind of strike, they really had to be old. He didn't know what they were and couldn't find anything about them in any coin books, and

I have SO been neglecting my coins!

...say it like a teenager... Not proud of it, but one hobby at a time. I got stuck on comics (Lady Death & Monster Madness) for the time being, and when I retire out of the Air Force, and buy my first house (I'll be 45 then) I'll be all over my coins again. My darling wife (remember the 1971 PF69Deep Cam half I bought?) said that she hopes we can get a house that will have enough room for me to put all my stuff (Military, coins, comics) in. I took it as a nice gesture at first, but now

Has anyone ever bought a $10 platinum 2005 graded MS70 accidently??

Apart from me, and then having to tell the wife?? I should be banned from Ebay...or at least be under supervision, and I'm not talking about superman's eyes! I was going through Ebay one night, and one search turned into something else. I can be searching for a good replacement for my registry 1971 proof set (which I really need now), and end up looking up General Grant's signatures. Don't ask me how I do that...that's why the supervision. One night I found myself looking at $10 pl

Registry question

...and I must enter a teaser....sheesh! I couldn't submit it unless I put something here! Is it allowed to list the same coin in two different registries? Let's say that I had a Lincoln proof that I wanted in my proof registry, but then I also have a Lincoln cent registry going on as well. Could I list the same coin in both?

NGC vs PCGS registry (Pt 2)

Really? (Yes, really) PCGS coins in the NCG registry are more in point value than their own graded coins? How does this happen? Listen, I didn't want to stir up so much emotion on this. First, let me address my statement, which is partly true. Not ALL the PCGS coins are graded higher. I am only registered with 2 sets, and that is in the 1971 proof set. Now NGC has been messin with the point value of the dime, and I wish they would stop (I lost 2960 points without touching it) but if you wil
