Why such a price span?

1971 proof 69 DCAM cent Alright, I know I shouldn't of did this, but I'm thinking of making one last purchase (and REALLY t'ing off the wife) but I just now noticed the 1971 PF 69 DCAM (or ultra). I may have noticed it before, but with my memory, who knows. Now it's fresh. The company PCGS list it's worth for $12,500, and NGC list it for $1,380. Now I do know that I used to always say that that cent was worth $11K, but I was shocked to see it now at $12,5K, which is a bigger increase th

What's the deal with NumisMedia

It seems like 75% of the coins listed don't have pricing It kinda burned me when I read this: NumisMedia does not currently support Star(*) Grades. 'No Price' notation indicates that NumisMedia does not yet provide the value for this coin. Alright, I can understand not pricing the * grade, but the second sentance?? I mean, come on! Even PCGS has a better pricing guide than NGC, even if a nickel is worth a $1.00, it lists it as such. Even the errors, and different varities. WHat a

What will the mint do?

When they get to Abe Lincoln AND Jefferson Davis? I was talking with some guys from the good state of SC, and of course, it usually ends up with a conversation about the civil war. WEll, they know about the new gold dollars with all the presidents on them, and kiddingly, one asked, "will they put Jeff Davis on them new dollar coins"? I kinda thought he may of had a point. I mean, Jeff Davis WAS the president of the confederate states of America, right? Or will they not because the confe

Unexpected PLEASANT find!

A coin show and a .15 Lincoln cent Well, here I am getting ready to use my early bird coupon 5 months later, and I am in a toss up to go for high grade cents, or variety. I literally have a handful of coins that I am inspecting with my 60x and comparing the Lincoln cents against some already graded NGC MS64 and MS65. I remember someone telling me it's all in Lincoln's ear. Well, I see that some of these 1957-1963 are nice and shiny, but the ear is worn. Bummer. So out of the handful I was a

Understanding turn around time

Follow up from yesterdays E-mail Fellow collectors, I do understand NGC getting swamped with submissions. I do understand that it's now going to take longer. I can also understand the price increase because of the aforementioned. Yes, NGC is a great coin grader. If you want the service, your gonna pay for it. If you want to service, your gonna wait for it. I really don't have a problem waiting an extra week, but it still sticks in my head that I could of had my submissions a week ago, li

To read Michael Coopers entries

And to reflect on a great hobby from a great country and an astounding history. I mean, think about it for a while. Not a second, but a while. How some people use the phrase "if these walls could talk", and you think of how old the house is, and what has transpired within those walls. Now, think of the coins you may have. I have a few 1808 half cents. Our Nation was only 32 years young. Thomas Jefferson was President. It was 4 years before the war of 1812 when the British didn't lear

To fellow "no grades" or "not recognized" coin collectors

In a way, I understand NGC....NOT totally though.. As I have stated in previous journals of mine, I'm trying to get my 1954 proof Dime error graded as a double die. There is no question in my mind that I'm seeing a big fat LIBERTY, as well as a messed up 54 in the date. I have included side by side pictures with the previous entries. I have found out that NGC uses ONLY printed publication as cherrypickers and others like that. With THAT said, if it ain't in those publications, then it's no

The local coin dealer's "treasure chest"

Not to mention the 50% off on all the coins inside led to an unknown "so called dollar" buy I'm stationed in Tampa, but for the past 5 weeks I've been in Panama City for school. Just for the heck of it on a Saturday, a friend and I went to a local coin and jewelry dealer just to check it out. Of course, lots of overpriced stuff for their 50% off sale so it was prety much window shopping. Long story shortened, I saw his "treasure chest" of coins, went through them and picked out a 1777 48 Ei

The 2007 proof sets

They're in! I got my 3 (one for each kid) now the question is... What are the errors to be looking for? I thought I had a smooth edge Washington, but after getting it in the right light, I did see the letters. Has anyone heard of any errors yet?

Registry question ANSWER

Thanks to all who answered me Yes, I did get a lot of responses from my fellow collectors, but also from AMY for NGC who also wrote me with: "Yes, you may use the same coin (same cert #) in different sets. As in your example, you may register your 1971 1C proof in your 1971 Proof set and in a Lincoln Cent Proof set. What you may not do is register the same coin (same cert #) to sets of the same type. In your case, you have registered two (2) 1971 Proof sets. You may not register the same c

Registry question

...and I must enter a teaser....sheesh! I couldn't submit it unless I put something here! Is it allowed to list the same coin in two different registries? Let's say that I had a Lincoln proof that I wanted in my proof registry, but then I also have a Lincoln cent registry going on as well. Could I list the same coin in both?

RE:NUMISMEDIA vs. PCGS PRICE GUIDES Take 2

I see both of your points, but... If it's a guideline, then list some guide line prices. It should be regardless of how many NGC has graded vs what the coin is worth. I guess it should boil down to, get a monthly coin publication or check PCGS for free. Speaking of 1971's (my favorite coin collectible), there was a PCGS 1971-S PF 69 Deep Cameo on Ebay (another reason to check the pricelog) and got the wife permission to bid. Our beloved NGC lists it for $1250.00, PCGS NOW lists it for $

RE: Any other married gentlemen out there?

When I talk about coins, there is a very errie hush.... ...that one would only hear right before a storm. There are some pleasant remarks of expression, and "forced" interest to what I am talking about, but it's still very, very quiet. I have come to learn that if she "closes her eyes, I will go away". If she shows an interest, maybe I will just let it lay there. She kindly reminds me that we have to watch our money. Sometimes I remember that conversation, most of the time I don't re

RE: Look what I found Pt 1

Mr. Cooper..... If I can find a find like that, Can I borrow 3 of your 9 kids? I got 3 of my own, so I figure, I may come up with at least a 1909 VDB...Hopefully in better condition. I'll even let you choose the kids! :-)

Question about 1979 SBA dollars

Have you seen the price difference for narrow and wide rim? Follow collectors, do me yet another favor and check the NGC population for the 1979 SBA dollars and look at narrow and wide rim SBA dollars. Is that a correct price for a narrow rim SBA?? I went on another website and they pretty much said that the narrow constituted for about 45% of the population, before they went wide rim. What is the real difference between the 1979P, they 1979 narrow, and the 1979 wide? The wide and narrow I

Presidential errors

An error within itself...kinda Well, it's minimal, but in the NGC report of the Presidentail errors of the MONROE Dollar, they show a Washington Dollar (told you it was minimal!) But apart from that, Granted, that's cool and all, but there are some real other errors I asked NGC about, that they denied me on. One is the eye on Madison. Some are full circle, some arn't (that also goes along with the curl on the shoulder, missing one). The other is a die crack on the reverse that extend

Pics of MY oldest coins

They are 81 and 82 years younger than Mr. Coopers! Like I said in one of my earlier entries, I bought these at a flea market probably around 1979-81 (I was 16 or 18). The guy wanted $10.00 a peice for them, and I did the usual "well, I don't know, I just want them as a joke to tell my Ma look what I found in the back yard" type deal, but I knew that with that kind of strike, they really had to be old. He didn't know what they were and couldn't find anything about them in any coin books, and

People are people

Deadlines Yes, I too am not too happy with the slowness of NGC. But, I've also learned that you don't tell the barber that he gives bad haircuts right before you get yours! In saying that, to the person that complains to NGC all the time about them being slow, well, you may not know it, and I'M NOT saying that they do this, but your order just may get pushed down a few more! The other point that I would like to make is, if they said it was going to be 15 days for modern, and got it to you i

PCGS 1971-S Silver Proof 70 Deep Cameo Eisenhower

Finally, the proud owner of said coin It has been a long time coming, and I am still on the verge of hyperventilation, but I own it now. Took a little wheelin and dealin', but I have it. Mind you, it's not too often I can ever find one at such an incredible price. I am just happy, and it's a Merry Christmas to me! (Please, no grinches to rain on my parade. It would be much appreciated) To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

NGC vs PCGS registry (Pt 2)

Really? (Yes, really) PCGS coins in the NCG registry are more in point value than their own graded coins? How does this happen? Listen, I didn't want to stir up so much emotion on this. First, let me address my statement, which is partly true. Not ALL the PCGS coins are graded higher. I am only registered with 2 sets, and that is in the 1971 proof set. Now NGC has been messin with the point value of the dime, and I wish they would stop (I lost 2960 points without touching it) but if you wil

NGC Customer Service

Reply INSTEAD OF Forward I really couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this. And she's in customer service? I, like the rest of you collectors, TRIED to be understanding with the extended turn around times, and wanted a somewhat small compensation. Read the E-mail trail that I had from customer service. Start from the bottom for it to make sense. Ms. Kesten,   Thank you for the positive reinforcement (and your customer service?) Please FORWARD THIS to Scott   Sincerely   Pam

NGC and error grading....

And I thought I had it... Here I am...pretty confident about my submission...I know I have a dead ringer with the 1951 D/S FS-511 which, BTW, graded out as MS-62 RB, and pretty sure of all the other ones. NGC had other opinions. They were quick to tell me that my 1914 Dime had UNC details, and was improperly cleaned, but didn't recognize the die break on the reverse (probably 1/16-1/8 inch long). My 1946 D/D/D wasn't that, but it had it's own special little baggie with a sticker on IT, that

New #1 1971 proof set

Just got the certificate in the mail A few weeks ago, I got my certificate in the mail for having the #1 slot for the 1971 proof set. Granted, it cost me alot of begging, bargaining and gettin yelled at, but it was worth it (ahem). What was more of a challenge for me is that I was going up against "the" #1 1971 Eisenhower Doller graded PCGS PF 70 Deep Cam! I had already resolved myself to the fact that #2 is good, but then NGC FINALLY upgraded the Roosevelt dime points (pf 69 deep cam) whic

My 1971 Proof set at #2....I just couldn't wait

I already paid for the coin (and told my wife) Well, I'm still here, so she didn't kill me. She knows that I know that I wanted this coin, and the chance to obtain it doesn't come often (lucky for me) I just got the bill in my E-mail, and it's officially paid for; but now it's time to get on the selling side of ebay.....dang it. Anybody collect Blair's hot sauces?? :-)
