If I May Suggest...

To heck with the slab! I'm fairly new at numismatics (only two years or so) so what I am about to write may very well be based upon my own ignorance -- so be it, i've looked like a fool before! Why is it really necessary to have coins (at least relatively modern issues) slabbed at all? I can see issues that have a great deal of fraud involved, especially gold and (from what I am hearing) trade dollars. But there are other methods of acquisition and conservation out there that don't involved

A New Addition!

Yet one step closer... I've just added a 1916 Barber dime to my 20th century set. Just a few more coins to go, and that will be it! The newest member of my set can be viewed below. The Barber and Standling Liberty quarters are the next major acquisitions, though that may take a little while... Spouses can't stop us!

Numismatists looking for their next fix! It makes no difference...disapporving looks, long silences, the occasional "How will we feed the children" do not stop us. We acquire little friends in plastic holders, such as the one pictured below. But it's never enough. We must have MORE MORE MORE! I, for example, MUST have a Barber dime...and then a Barber quarter...and then a Type 1 Standing Liberty...and so it goes. Will it ever end?!? I certainly hope not... By the way, the coin pictured below

My 20th Century Type Set

Signature Series -- What a great idea! I have lamented in the past about the inflexibility of the competitive registry -- namely, I can't afford to buy the gold coins needed to complete the 20th century set! A wise member recommended that I create my own set using the Signature Series utility. What a great idea! It's a LOT easier to keep track of the set I'm trying to build, and I get a great sense of satisfaction from it. I borrowed the basic format from another set -- I've forgotton the name

20th Century Type Sets

WHY MUST THERE BE GOLD? The full USA Type Set does not have gold included. I am on a limited budget -- there is absolutely no way that I will ever be able to complete a 20th century registry set with gold included. Granted, this is not an Earth-shattering issue, but I would like to have the satisfaction of someday seeing "100% complete" next to that set. Can a type set category like this be created? Insight from those who know would be appreciated -- thanks!

Grading time

Depends on the service, but NGC follows the times on their website pretty closely. I sent in 5 coins two weeks ago (arriving Thursday of that week)on their economy plan, which called for ten business days to grade. I got an e-mail yesterday saying the coins had been shipped -- ten days on the nose. Can't speak for PCGS or any of the others...
