Updated my Top 100 Morgan VAM Registry Set

I've posted photos of most of my Top 100 VAM regeistry set. The pics are not the typical "ooohhhhhh look at my MS-96 Proof" Check it out! updated my Top 100 VAM registry set quite a bit this month. Rather than post normal obverse and reverse photos that focus on the quality of the coin, I tried to provide a close-up microscope photo of the VAM feature and describe the variety. I've imaged almost all the coins in the registry but have been sidetracked the last week with holiday activities. T

Well... I'd say thank for the kind words... but anyway Well, I am glad to see some informative responses to my previous post. I had not considered the concept that many coins are returned ungraded. Although your delivery lacked tact, you have a valid argument. As I mentioned.. Im not out to make money.. but if you think it would cost me more this way.. I may have to give it some more thought. NGC vs PCGS

Possibly correct in this case. I hate doing other peoples homework. This shouldn't surprise anyone. This is just the same old game dealers have played with a coin for years. When they are selling it, it's a perfect coin that is a screaming gem worthy of a premium. But if they're buying the same coin, it has multiple problems that they have to discount the coin for in able to sell it. MAKING THAT BIG BUY!!!

How much is to much? The year was 2006 and John a collector of Morgan Dollars purchased a professionally graded 18xx-S MS63 for $50.00. John was happy with his purchase but wished he could afford a higher grade. Ken a friend of John's also was a Morgan collector. Photographs

Without one, what is the point. Concearning the registry sets and photographs. Without a photograph to go along with the registry set what is the point of viewers looking at your set? There is none. The point here is to show others what you have put together. Anybody can plop a certification number onto the site but that doesn't show me the coins actual grade when held up to scrutiny. Many an MS65 look like MS64's or MS66's. Show me the coin and lets see if yours lives up to the grade.

Heritage Auctions says at least a 20% discount for NGC coins Was going to put some coins up for auction with Heritage today and when they found out they were NGC coins, they didn't seem interested. re grading times

at least you can get them to grade your coins about month and half ago...I sent 200 memorial 1c's to be prescreened...now these were 200 coins i had already screened for bag marks and scuffs, good strikes etc. the grader sent them back...not enough to meet the 35% grading level...now true, I had sent them as min grade ms-66...but these were blaze reds w/out marks....ok...i got em back and rescreened to the best 100...lowered the min to ms-65...guess what....got em back today for not meeting 3

When you say '45 days' do you mean calendar days or business days? Also bear in mind that the holidays throw everyone's schedules...   Oh, when I spoke to NGC last (about 2 weeks ago, I think), they did indeed confirm that Early Bird was running 11-12 business days late... I think I'll avoid that service for awhile...

Day ??? Slowly but surely

The journey continues... I am now up to 5 coins purchased. I have 2 in my possession... and awaiting 3 recently purchased on Ebay. It is tough to fork out money on stuff for myself during the holidays... so my purchasing will probably somewhat reserved until spring. Hmmm...is there a hot time of year to purchase coins? Is there a seasonal effect on values? Interesting question.. I am not really sure. We will see.   DP

Yes there has been some grade inflation for PCGS graded coins. I have several Morgans that were in old rattler holders that now reside in a newer NGC or PCGS holder a grade higher. When PCGS first started, they were very conservative. They had quality as the issue of utmost importance. This, along with being the first allowed them to dominate the market initially. Then with the appearance of NGC and ANACS later in the 80's, competitive forces dictated that PCGS become a little less conservative

If you've read through the descriptions and photos for other sets, what type of formats have you liked? Kennedy's seem like a good choice to be personally creative about a set that lacks the variety and longer history of other types. I've probably have stayed up too late and had some fun catching up on descriptions just to say more than PFUC69 - 1998-S Clad.

SMS=Special mint set, plus some history Back in 1965-67, the mint made what they called special mint sets. Proof sets were not made for those years. Mint sets are assembled from normal business strike coins. These coins are struck once under standard minting pressure from the dies. My First Colorful Morgan

NGC graded it MS63, but it is pretty. Normally I post in the NGC chat but I'll place this coin in my journal. It is an 1885-O Morgan graded MS63 by NGC. The scuffs on her cheek keep the grade down, but it has excellent eye appeal. It looks like it toned while sitting in a mint bag for years. Re; ANACS net grading

If a coin grades MS60 Details and "scratched" by ANACS...will it grade at NGC or PCGS?? -Maybe but unlikely ANACS net graded problem coins have a small chance of being graded by NGC or PCGS. Both state they will not grade problem coins. Some minor problems like early PVC resudue could be removed and the coin could get graded by NGC. If the PVC has caused damage (spots, etching), then the coin will not be graded. Major problem coins like your scratched coin will not get into a NGC or PCGS h

The NCS homepage will tell you more. I read the entry on a MS64FH SL quarter. I guess the graders at NGC felt the coin had some surface problems that held down the grade. NGC Regrading for early holders

I have a number of first generation slabs (early commems) graded 64-65. Has anyone had much success in grading up with a regrade? My PCGS rattlers have all moved up 1 grade (both from PCGS and NGC) although my PCGS green holders have a 1/12 upgrade percentage. Any insights?   As for the debate about grading, i have owned raw, PCGS, NGC, ANACS, NTC (sucks), ICG, and a few others, and have dumped all but NGC and PCGS. COIN SCORE CORRECTION

NGC NOT SITTING ON OLD NUMBERS Anybody try NGC's new Score Correction yet? I did and my reaction was Wow! If you've got a good candidate for score upgrading, just go to your score challenged candidate coin, click on the date and get that baby a new pair of shoes. In my case, Scott Schechter raised the score on my Type 1, 1956 Proof 68 Ultra Cameo Franklin over 350%. Of course, the coin deserved the new score but Scott's response took less than 24 hours.
