MISSING COIN?

I count 7. NGC counts 6? I count 7 coins in my Second Kennedy Anniversary set of half dollars. The score is as a number 1 set. The Grades are also. Collecting used to be fun, it has become less now that the US Mint has gone haywire. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Shattered - Part 6

1847 Crain-3C Yes, this is another post about an 1847 shattered reverse half dime. As mentioned in earlier posts in this series, there is a third variety, Crain-3C, about which Steve Crain wrote that he had only ever seen one example. I did not have in mind to search all the 1847 half dimes in Heritage's archives to look for more. But while looking at price histories in that archive, I did look at some of the recently sold coins. The photo below is the reverse of an NGC MS64 that was part of

Shattered - Part 5

More examples found! In the Summer 2015 issue of the Gobrecht Journal (Liberty Seated Collectors Club publication), Steve Crain (half dime expert) wrote an article in which he discussed three varieties of 1847 half dimes with shattered reverse dies. He designated them Crain-1A, Crain-2B, and Crain-3C (numbers 1-2-3 identifying obverse dies, letters A-B-C identifying reverse dies), and noted that he had only ever seen one example of the 2B and 3C. In my earlier posts in this series, I wrote o

The 1928 Lindbergh Medal

On May 4, 1928, the Congress of the United States passed a joint resolution authorizing the striking of a gold medal to be presented to Charles A Lindbergh. This medal was to commemorate him for the first non-stop transatlantic flight between New York and Paris on May 20-21, 1927. In a ceremony held on August 15, 1930, President Hoover presented the Congressional Gold Medal to Charles A. Lindbergh. The resolution also provided for the striking of no more than 10 million bronze medals to be sol

Photo Take II

I have tried for years to crop circles, that is Coins... Here is the corrected version of the previous photo. I have corrected the die rotation. The coin was slightly rotated clockwise obverse ~1.7 degrees. This did not account for the full reverse counterclockwise rotation of 7.2 degrees. 17601.TIF To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

My first Photoshop succcess

I have tried for years to crop circles, that is Coins... Finally I have got cropping the circular coin down. To those of you who are Photoshop savvy this is dumb as dirt, but I just could not get my programs to do the job. All computer/digital picture are saved in pixels which are square. So cropping a square is easy but a circle is another issue. I tried to search on line a couple of years ago and got a ton of hits on "crop circles"... like aliens and corn fields. But I finally got the r

A Modern COMMEMORATIVE weekend planned

Many bids this week working both ends of the sets!! Friends, As usual I am always trying to figure out a new direction in collecting coins. I have many Modern Commems to send in for grading and at the same time I am building a dansco set on the raw end. It is great to complete a raw set as well as a graded set of each series I compete in. I have a blast at both sides without the total letdown of grading and expenses. Going for some TOUGH hole fillers in my RAW set this week. ---- Wish me l

Eugene Gardner Passes

RIP, Gene. The new issue of The E-Gobrecht (Liberty Seated Collectors Club monthly electronic newsletter) reported the passing last month of Eugene Gardner. Many of you know that he had recently sold his amazing coin collection through Heritage in four sales in 2014 and 2015. He succumbed to complications of multiple myeloma, the same cancer that claimed my mother-in-law several years ago. I did not know Gene well, but did meet and speak with him briefly a few times. All but the first meetin

The 1920 Army Navy Chaplains Medal

I know I posted about acquiring this medal earlier, but since then I have had this medal graded. I am also including in this post more of the background information associated with this medal. The last time I posted I started a lively thread on the merits of certifying medals (Actually user RWB in response to my post did). The final grade of this medal represents one of many reasons I am grading the medals in my Laura Gardin Fraser set. I am thrilled with the MS-63 grade this medal received. Bef

A Sky Blue '60

It took a bit of magic to capture this image. When viewing a toned silver coin from a certain, special angle you can really appreciate the color, but it can be nearly impossible to capture in a photograph. Somehow, I positioned an OttLite, just right, to maximize the color on this one. Try as I might, I just can't replicate it and now that the coin is encapsulated, there's little hope of success. Of all the coins of Spain that I've collected, this is my one late empire example, purchased for

My Collecting Budget

Is not quite big enough..... When I was in middle and high school, back in the 90s, my Dad and I went all over Texas, visiting baseball card shows. I collected cards back then, but we really got into meeting Hall of Fame players and getting autographs. Yogi Berra, Brooks and Frank Robinson, Willie Mays, etc. When the strike happened in 1995, the shows dried up. My Dad was working on an early 60s Al Kaline endorsed glove that we had gotten a bunch of signatures on. He has since given it t

Rewarding myself a little

Six ounces, one month and 10 lbs. My wife finally convinced me to start going to the gym with her and dieting to try to diminish the size of my spare tire while she tries to lose the rest of her baby weight. This is something I've wanted to do for years but I just never made myself do it during grad school. We agreed that we'd both treat ourselves in some way when we'd been good for a month. She wanted a pedicure. I wanted coins. I gave some thought to what I wanted. I wanted to get somet

Shame on NGC 2?

ERRORS? I recently sent two of my coins in for error certification and was very disappointed with the way NGC graded them. An Old Question (or Debate) Renewed

Early Releases vs. First Day of Issue - Opinions Sought! Once upon a time, when Early Releases or First Strikes were young and new, they seemed desirable to many collectors. Other collectors may not have cared, understandable. The prevalence of such coins, however, often left a collector with the choice of buying a coin with no designation or selecting an Early Released, First Releases, First Strikes coin for the same price. I can't speak for other collectors, but when the two were side b
