Variety Diagnostics

Well made with a partially satin finish. Struck from the same dies as deeply prooflike Goodacre Presentation Dollars, prior to relapping.

Comments

Sculptor Glenna Goodacre designed the obverse of the Sacagawea Dollar. As a non-Mint Employee she earned a $5,000 fee for her work. She elected to receive her payment in the form of 5,000 Sacagawea Dollars. Ceremoniously, outgoing Mint Director Philip Diehl flew to Sante Fe, New Mexico, where her studio was located, to hand deliver the coins on April 5, 2000. The coins presented to her were specially prepared and handled by the Mint. Fewer than an estimated 5% are Early Die State, and the remainder are deeply mirrored prooflike examples. NGC labels these coins as specimens, using the grade prefix SP.
