Reeded Edge Half Dollar Die Varieties (1836-1839)

In 1836 the U. S. Mint installed a steam-driven press that permitted the coining of half dollars within a close collar. At the moment of striking, this collar imparted a reeded edge, and half dollar types with earlier lettered edges were discontinued. This improvement was accompanied by dies on which the entire design had been transferred by hubbing, with the sole exception of the date and mintmark. Subsequent coins were thus highly standardized and lacked the personality of earlier issues.

The short reeded edge half dollar series enjoyed generous mintages, with but two exceptions. The 1836 half dollar issue was limited to between 1,200 and a few thousand pieces, the exact number being uncertain. The first half dollar emission of the New Orleans Mint was the 1838-O, of which just twenty were reportedly coined as proofs early in 1839. The 1839-O half dollar is scarce but still quite collectable. An extremely rare 1839 reeded edge half dollar die variety features the Small Letters reverse of the Seated Liberty Type.

NGC will attribute all Capped Bust Reeded Edge Half Dollars by Graham-Reiver (GR) numbers under its VarietyPlus Service. The well illustrated book by Dick Graham built upon the original monograph by Jules Reiver, and its new variety designations reflect the work of both individuals.
