From the NGC Archives: 1937 Battle of Antietam Half Dollar

Posted on 11/16/2010

The Battle of Antietam Creek, also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, occurred on September 17, 1862.

It was depicted in the memorable 1989 film Glory, starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. This was the costliest single-day battle of the American Civil War.

As a type, the Antietam Half Dollar offers both an important commemorative theme and some of the finest sculpturing to appear on a United States coin. Gems of this popular issue are not especially rare, but ones meriting the grade of MS 68 are truly memorable. This delightful specimen is fully struck throughout and displays extremely bright luster of finely grained frostiness. Further enhancing its appeal is a glorious array of colors forming broad, concentric arcs around both sides of this truly spectacular coin.
