The Top 50 Peace Dollar varieties are those recognized by the Society of Silver Dollar Collectors as the 50 most interesting and desirable VAM varieties (VAM is an acronym for Van Allen and Mallis, the authors of an extensive reference encyclopedia on Morgan and Peace Dollars). While there are countless minor varieties for the Peace Dollar series, only the Top 50 VAM varieties will be attributed by NGC. These are the ones popularly sought by collectors.

Coins included within the Top 50 are documented in a new book by Jeff Oxman and Dr. David Close titled The Official Guide to the Top 50 Peace Dollar Varieties. NGC will both attribute and grade any of the varieties included in this book. NGC also attributes all 8-tailfeather, 7/8-tailfeather, Top 100 and Hot 50 Morgan Dollars by VAM varieties.

To receive Top 50 variety attributions, submitters of uncertified Peace Dollars should include $5 per coin above the regular grading fee for their selected tier. The same additional cost applies when submitting Peace Dollars in other companies' holders for NGC's Crossover Service. Peace Dollars already certified by NGC may be resubmitted for Top 50 varieties under NGC's Designation Review service. The fee for this service is $10 and includes reholdering.
