Theme for 88th annual event is “Blue, Gray & Greenbacks.”
On April 12, 1861, the United States’ bloodiest conflict began with the Battle of Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. The ANA is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Civil War during National Coin Week, April 17–23. The theme for the 88th annual event is “Blue, Gray & Greenbacks.” Members are invited to get involved by promoting the hobby in the community and participating in ANA activities.
Beginning March 14, weekly video clues have been posted on www.money.org and on the ANA’s YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/AmericanNumismatic. The clues challenge participants to collect Civil War-related numismatic items and feature ANA staff, numismatic icons and a very special guest. Everyone who collects all six items can register online for a prize drawing for an 1864 two-cent piece, three-cent pieces and other prizes.
Club Trivia Challenge
Member clubs are competing in a Civil War trivia challenge. The club that performs the best on the 15-question challenge will receive a 1925 Stone Mountain half dollar; other prizes include a set of Confederate notes, and two & three cent pieces. Members can still register for the challenge by sending an e-mail to [email protected].
“A House Divided: Money of the Civil War,” the Edward C. Rochette Money Museum’s main gallery exhibit, will be featured throughout the week. Children can take a fun quiz with answers found in the exhibit; every child who completes the quiz wins two 2011 Gettysburg National Park State Quarters (Philadelphia and Denver). Adults will receive $2 off admission.
In the Community
There is a wealth of material on www.money.org, including a sample press release, proclamation and interactive brochure. The ANA’s four-panel traveling exhibit, “Money of the Civil War,” is also available online and is great for educational presentations at schools, libraries and club meetings. ANA members are encouraged to send images and articles showcasing their National Coin Week activities to [email protected] for possible publication in The Numismatist.
National Coin Week is celebrated each year in the third full week in April with exhibits, educational resources, presentations and other activities at civic centers, libraries and schools to let the world know about the joys of collecting and studying coins and other forms of money.
