A gallery of exceptional coins from the collection of one of Cincinnati's most storied families.

The Nippert Family Collection
Louis and Louise Dieterle Nippert were great philanthropists and patrons of their hometown, Cincinnati. They also amassed a diverse coin collection. Not seen publicly for decades, shown here are standout pieces including classic rarities and exceptional type coins.

For the benefit of the Greenacres Foundation, the Nippert Family Collection will be sold by Mallette & Associates on July 25, 2015. View sale >

NGC was selected to certify over 200 coins from the Nippert Family Collection, estate holdings belonging to one of Cincinnati's most illustrious families. In total, over 400 lots of coinage and currency from their collection are being sold on Saturday, July 25, 2015 by Mallette & Associates at the Greenacres Foundation Arts Center in Cincinnati, OH.

This collection of US coins is by all measures diverse. There are numerous collector coins for all comers and 19th and 20th Century Double Eagles for gold bugs. But the collection also contains a 1792 Birch Cent, Judd-4, graded VG 10, a pleasing example of this very important early Federal issue. It is one of just seven known of the variety. The Large Cent specialist will find much of interest. Not only are their two choice Chain Cents, but a condition-census 1793 Wreath Cent (S-5) and nicely detailed 1793 Liberty Cap Cent.

In total, NGC certified and attributed 64 different Large Cents by Sheldon number, including the following: S-2, S-3, S-5, S-6, S-11b, S-14, S-17a, S-19a, S-22, S-24, S-25, S-26, S-27, S-28, S-31, S-41, S-42, S-44, S-47, S-49, S-51, S-52, S-54, S-55, S-56, S-57, S-63, S-65, S-69, S-70, S-71, S-89, S-108, S-115, S-142, S-146, S-153, S-160, S-165, S-166, S-170, S-175, S-183, S-187, S-189, S-215, S-225, S-227, S-230, S-234, S-239, S-240, S-243, S-244, S-248, S-258, S-259, S-262, S-266c, S-270, S-273, S-274, S-275 and S-294. Coins illustrated below are shown in bold.

Proof and Mint State type coins are represented by a couple of wonderful gem Standing Liberty Quarters, a Choice Mint State 1859-O Seated Dollar and a pair of special trade dollars, shown below. Finishing out the eclectic bunch are several interesting Carson City and New Orleans gold coins and a wonderful, near-gem Hawaii Dollar.

The unusual nature of the offering is due in part to its origins. Although individual provenance is not known for each item, the coins and currency are a combination of the family's multi-generation holdings beginning with James Gamble (1803-1891), co-founder of Procter & Gamble. Louis Nippert (1903-1992), Gamble’s great-grandson, his wife Louise Dieterle Nippert (1911-2012), and her father, George Dieterle (1883-1968), all contributed items which form the collection now being dispersed.

Of course, Louis and Louise Nippert are not known as coin collectors. Rather they are known as great philanthropists, having supported a variety of causes and organizations in their native Cincinnati. Louise Nippert, who performed as a soloist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, made headlines in 2009 when she donated $85 million to the performing arts in Cincinnati. Proceeds from the sale of their coins will benefit the Greenacres Foundation, a farm and education center they founded in Cincinnati. The Nipperts were also co-owners of the Cincinnati Reds from 1966 until Louise's death in 2012, her 46-year tenure making her the longest serving owner in MLB history.
