The addition of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to all United States coins which could accommodate it was mandated in 1865, becoming effective with the coinage of 1866.
The plan originated as early as 1861, however, and patterns bearing various prototype mottoes were coined.
This half-dollar dated 1862 carries the motto GOD OUR TRUST. Pedigreed to the famed Eliasberg Collection, this near gem was described by catalogers Bowers & Merena as having pleasing, warm gold toning, with wisps of blue on the obverse. Superbly struck, with bright and reflective surfaces, it is a most attractive pattern coin.
