From the NGC Archives: 1829 / 27 Half Dollar Overton-102

Posted on 9/10/2013

The Capped Bust Half Dollar series includes numerous overdates, and this variety is one of the more easily seen ones.

All four undertype numerals are visible, and the underlying 7 is especially sharp at its bottom.

Numismatic scholar Walter Breen rated this variety as Extremely rare UNC. This gem specimen fits comfortably within the condition census provided in the 3rd edition of Al Overton's standard reference on early halves. It is his variety O-102. Well struck and highly lustrous, with light toning of gold and gray overall, this beautiful coin also displays delightful iridescent colors clinging to its borders. A rarity, it is aesthetically superb, as well.
