The date was first punched sloping downward from to right and then corrected.


This is one of several obverse dies used for 1867 proof dollars. It was later used for currency strikes, but the underlying date is more easily seen on proofs. Though previously described as Large over Small Date, the same date punch appears to have been used for both impressions.
