Variety Diagnostics

The front leg of the Buffalo is missing.

This variety was caused by excessive die polishing. It has become the most popular Buffalo Nickels variety, and one of the most popular US coin varieties. To spot fakes, check for these diagnostics: one point of the Buffalo’s beard is longer than the other; the Buffalo’s back leg is rough and withered; there is die pitting beneath the Buffalo’s body.
